Hi Tony again,

I fished the Yarra in this area a lot last year. It's fairly tough to find the fish. Although the big carp can be a lot of fun especially when you can sight stalk them in the yak.

A depth sounder is very useful for finding the deep holes as they are not always obvious with the murky water. Although the water does become clearer after the spring rains subside into summer. I fish with a small sitin to make the passage down the various rapids manageable.

yeah it is a hard river to fish Kevin, the water is just so low at the moment... up where we were there were lots of small rapids to negotiate. was great fun.Surprisingly when i trolled a lure (Kokoda- equivelant sx40) i only snagged the once(minor) and i took it through the rapids and all. what a great lure.but fishing with bait was a bloomin nightmare.

I use to fish this area quite a bit and I found that the best way to approach it with bait is to use no lead. Just use as big a worm as you can find and don't use a sinker. Cast the worm upstream and let it drift back down. You won't get anywhere near as many snags and 10 times more strikes.

I haven't actually fished it from a yak yet. Instead I get into the drink and walk upstream. The fish are always facing upstream, so they don't see you coming. The tricky part is making sure they don't hear you coming.

great advice 5th, i only had 0/0 sinker just to cast it out but yeah that was the obvious issue with snags. And the fish face upstream, i never considered that...makes fishing outta the yak more appropriate for these conditions.... i will have to give that a go next time.
