Similar topic to 5ths Townsville post - chasing some local info on fishing at Airlie Beach. My brother and I are heading up on friday night and picking up a mate (yakless) from the airport on saturday at around lunch. This leaves us about a 5hr early morning window for a yak fish off/around the airlie beach area on Saturday morning. I've endeavoured to find some local info or fishing reports on the net but can't find anything but tourist based sites advertising offshore charters.

I'm happy to explore around but with only the one trip window it would be handy to have a head start with some local info. Any help appreciated!

Travis

PS we can't go fishing sunday because we'll be attached firmly to the lounge with a carton of beer and a couple of kgs of fresh prawns barracking loudly for the mighty Holdens at Bathurst!

For anyone else who refers back to this topic I just found this post by yakfly in Flumps "Fishing the Whitsundays" thread in this "Main" section of the forum. :)

on your way thru proserpine stop in at proserpine bait and tackle, its on the highway.Lawrie the owner is the resident guide at Peter Faust dam but should be able to give you the good oil on whats happening round the traps elsewhere.Yes there are park zones that youll have to avoid and yes there should be maps available, otherwise try the DPI website i think youll find a link on Browniescoastwatch.com.
Mate you could always try in the dam,the barra are on the chew and theyre big (1m+ range) if you see the shags and birds hanging in one spot have a troll past. spots to try are Dingo Beach which is sheltered from the strong SE that sometimes blow up and just out the front of shute harbour round the many islands that are there.Usual suspects like tuna, mackeral,GTs and queenfish are usually round this time of year.i think there was also a guy who runs yak tours out of shute harbour but i dont know if hes still doing it.

You lucky so'n'so!

The harbour area at Shute Harbour would be worth a look. A few years back we chartered a yaucht and set off from there with the locals catching huge GT's from the wharf as we departed. They informed us they catch all sorts of quality fish from there. Could be a starting point if you only have a few hours.
