I actually ordered my FF/GPS combo before I ordered my yak - and that was a decision that I certainly don't regret.

I have never been fishing on my yak without the sounder, but I honestly don't know what I would do without it. It is a very good tool for finding the edge of the reef and looking for baitfish schools - as well as the larger fish you intend to target. Basically, if I haven't had any action on my bait/lure in 15 mins and the sounder is bare, I move on. I then troll a lure around until I find some reasonable echos and cast into them. It really is a time saver and I don't know how others get along without one.

I go one further and enter coordinates of likely underwater structures from charts into my cheap n nasty GPS, great for those pinnacles!

Also good for trip distance, speed  and night navigation (not for the inexperienced)

One tip for others though - seal off the external aerial socket (if your GPS has one) there are electrons floating around this area and coupled with seawater makes a lovely green mess of your aerial connection!

I talked to the Garmin rep about this and he consistantly evaded any answers or solutions, including why there is no mention of this problem in the manual  Insulation tape over the hole works well enough but you need to keep an eye on it, even though they are rated as "waterproof" Get a cheap yellow ETrex - suit a yak fine, and all the mapping stuff and colour screens are O.T.T. for yakfishing.

I must have the sounder, if not I have no idea what lure to use, I like to have my lures sitting close to the bottom at all times..........also have a handheld gps, havent used it on the yak yet, but will assist in dist travelled and how fast....or slow....also the gps will be used for over night camps!
