Headed to West Lakes in the hope of catching a mulloway last night. Was all organised and on the water by 6:30pm. My plan for live bait was to flick around a hb for a hour or so to see if any salmon were around. Failing that, put a bit of gulp sandworm on a small hook and hope for some mullet (this has worked for me in other areas).

I luckily managed to catch a salmon in the first 10mins. I slow trolled him around from about 6:45 until 11pm and didn’t even get a touch.

I did however manage to catch about 10 bream with the biggest just shy of 40cm, by flicking an sx40 at structure and the banks.

I have some pics on the film camera, but they wont be developed for a while,. Sorry.

Well done on the bream JW - any trip that scores bream to 40cm is a good one. Pity about the mulloway - did you get any whispers there were any around (bait fish jumping etc)? If its not too much info, what part of the lake were you trying?

thats it. im gonna have to get out there and catch some mullys aren't I guys???

live mullet, under a bridge and over some dropoffs (and there is some VERY lumpy bottom in there in places  ) and whammo... fish on 8) . maybe deadstick some bait, and flick sp's with another.

need to wait for a week for the tides to pick up, and i reckon a strong outgoing flow after dusk should do it. need to check tides/moon phases.

nice consolation whopping bream, and interesting to see salmon/trout. i havent ever seen them in there, but im always up the other end with the massive mullet schools. apparently squid in there too, down your end. maybe a live squid?

water baby

Which end are you talking about (mullet schools), north or south?

Will have to catch up for a fish mate.

That was my frist time fishing west lakes, so I've a lot to learn.

right up in the north end, in front of the legtrap hotel pedestrian bridge, and all the way to the outlet into the port on bower rd. have scanned the area a bit with the ff and it is really deep in parts, with 2-3 foot rises along the bottom, with some bits being up to 4-5 feet.

i reckon im gonna give it a go tuesday or wednesday evening, and see how i go. then probably next friday or saturday evening. on the water and catching bait in the patented AKFF cordial bottle/bread trick by 1830, and troll a livey around until i get bored, probably 2030 or so. will need mozzie spray though!

Nice looking waterway there, and so close to the city too. I don't recognise taht stadium in the picture. Any clues?
unfortunately occy, the home of the crows. they ain't no port power, but then there can be only one super SA team!!

back on topic  i was at the bridge i usually fish tonight, and saw a bloke paddling towards me in the dusk light. not that unusual, until he came closer, and saw he was on a SOT. unusual for here, but no worries. then he approached the bridge, and i see a fishing rod sticking up next to him.

now this was unusual. i didnt have to shield my eyes from the colour of the yak, so it wasnt JW or Fisher (they have lurid coloured yaks, like me!) and he was too young to be Scupper (sorry Wayne!). and it was a bit far for adrian, or matty or duncan to come for a quick paddle, so i was stumped. had a quick chat as he went past, looked like he was either on a scupper pro with the two hatches, or an ocean river kayak (as distinct from OK kayaks). he got some bream on the troll, best went to a kilo, so not too bad for west lakes.

if it was someone from here, sorry i didnt chat more, the wind was really chilly and howling up the lake, so i was keen to get home to a snifter of port! if it wasnt someone here, then i take it all back!

either way, my new mully SP's werent touched, but looked sweet in the water. also tested my early xmas present (from me) a Jackall Chubby 38mm. tight action, deeper than the sx40s and got my seal of approval!

looking to get out on the yak tomorrow arvo for a reconnaissance mission before i head out next week. anyone keen for a paddle or beer can meet up at 2pm at the reserve at the end of dotterel drive (check the spelling. it is off the northern-most end of bartley terrace, near bower rd. its one of the few sand launches in the system. i probably wont concentrate on fishing, but ill have a rod and lures just in case!

JW: Good trip info. When you going out again? I will probably go out in that area sometime around 6ish next week.

BTW - Don't anyone listen to WaterBaby - Even Port supports can't hold up as evidenced by his recent upper body failings
