Guys, spooled 1's post on rubbish made me think of the time a mate caught a used franger while we were bream spinning Iron Cove Bay. At first he thought it was a jelly fish until he landed it. Then he struggled to get it off the hook without touching it. This makes me wonder, what is your weirdest catch when fishing? As I used to be a bit of a joker, the guys I game fished with once set me up nicely.
We were trolling 6 and 8kg tackle for small marlin as we needed points in ultra light for the club championship. It was a sunny Sydney day with no wind. I had consumed a few golden ales and was having a bit of a snooze. I woke to the sound of the ratchet screaming on the little 12 inter. I grabbed the rod as I was on strike and fought this weird feeling "fish". I couldn't work out what it was as it would slowly peel a bit of drag as we kept the boat moving forwards slowly into the small amount of wind. It appeared to keep angling deeper.
After 10 minutes or so it was getting close and we got a flash of silver down deep. We got on the down wind side of it and put the boat into neutral. I pumped it up the last 20 or so metres and discovered that I had "hooked" a galvanised garbage bin lid. One of the smart arses had drilled a couple of holes in it and rigged some heavy mono through it. The way they did this made it angle downwards when pulled forwards through the water. They had fed it over the side while I was snoozing and fed out a couple of hundred metres of line before engaging the ratchet which woke me up. It was our only capture of the day.
Catch ya Scott
