Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. Chris

When I fished offshore the temperature was a vital thing either side of current lines they would change and we always fished the hot side.

Many of the blokes fitted cool room senders on the transom with the dial on the dash, the modern FF has the temp function now of course.

Inside I think it just brings on the seasonal fishing eg; summer whiting, and I hope Bass this summer

In NZ 18c is the magic number for school snapper to start grouping up and hitting baits hard in large schools. It was 15.8 close in on the weekend and I heard outwide its up to 17 - 18ish. Not long now and all hell will break lose.

but to answer you question - yes water temp have a significant effect. Notably in NZ when the wind changes for any extended period of time (3 days odd) from the south in the autum, winter or spring the water temp drops slightly and all of a sudden its like someone stole all the fish. A few days of north easter on the eastern north island and its all on.

my undertanding fish process food significantly slower during colder periods and the opposite in warmer periods.

regards

temps can be the trigger to feeding activity foor some fish,as jb said 18 deg c is the magic number in nz,in oz the research shows this the magic number that triggers breeding so maybe the feeding frenzy is something to do with that.Others just have temp ranges they feel more comfrtable in,eg some tuna and mackerals in the 20 deg plus, barra 24deg plus .
the temp can govern what baitfish are around as well, best bet is keep a diary and see what patterns emerge over a period of time.
