Vava'u Island, Tonga

We recently returned from a weeks holiday in Tonga which was perfectly timed to coincide with the wide spread looting, arson and general distruction of the capitol city (they dont call Tonga the friendly islands for nothin).
We went to eat lunch at a flash resort down by at the beach and there were a couple of Kayaks that were laying around for general use. Seeing this got the blood pumping and it wasnt long before i was taking to pristine waters of the pacific. The kiddies wanted a go too so i came back in and loaded up the tandem yak and the missus and I grabbed one kid each and cruised around in the shallows. Wasnt long before we noticed that we were paddling over a massive school of bait fish that could be seen in the crystal clear waters less then a meter deep - just meters from the shore. The excitement really started and as my wife attempted to disembark, half way out of the yak half about a dozen rather large trevally hammered the school and the water began to boil with frantic baitfish that jumped in every direction. I was sitting in the back seat and could see them clearly and felt the thuds as a couple of them smashed into the hull of the yak. What i would have paid to have had a rod and a couple of slugs with me. The missus screamed and the waitresses from the restaraunt came running to see what the commotion was. It was pretty crazy.
Later on in the afternoon we sat on the jetty for a bit of a photo opp when the trevally came in for attack number 2, bait fish jumped everywhere. Now i wouldnt believe it either if there wasnt a pic to prove it but i actually caught one mid flight which was later released unharmed.
As you can see in the picture my little girl is absoltely petrified - i think she thought the fish were attacking US....
