Hi Yakkers

When I went out on thw wwekend for the first time, I noticed when setting a moderate pace while trolling that mu lure/s were skipping along the top......was curious how others troll, nice slow pace etc? I seems kind of hard to gauge what speed i should be doing, I used spinners and a stumpjumper that should have gone to 2.5 meters.....

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. Real slow mate. Just put your lure in beside the boat. When it is only just starting to swim, that is how fast ya need to go.

My trusty blue Nilsmaster can be ripped through the water and it still swims like a beaut fishy meal. When I have a distance to go, I can have it out the back and paddle whatever speed I like. It also can go slow, like when I am tired.

Other lures can't handle the speed so ya have to be really careful not to overdo it. Good for the end of the day!

So, I think it is good to get ta know what ya lure is swimming like at what speed and don't think ya have to go fast for them to work.

Mate, this is true of many of the larger body lures and works fine on the pelagic species.

for sneaking round the creeks & rivers trolling smaller jobbies, I have found that real slow gets many mor strikes.

That is part of the reason I am slowly moving away from high performance type hulls and starting to see the benifiets of a more comfortable (and fishable) hull design. In my canoes & pirogue, when trolling, I opt for a single blade, canoe paddle and even with that, I only stroke often enough to keep the boat moving forward - just. Perhaps one gentle stroke every 20 seconds or so. A lot of my hook ups are when I have stopped paddling completely and am playing a fish on the other line.

Gday ,nice and slow is the go ,I watch my rod tips for an indication of how the lure is working.A lot of the time I can drift just with the breeze,I often fish with guys in electric powered tinnies and even on their slowest setting they are going way faster than me,but it certainly works for me.Hope you get a few cheers Gary

Trolling speed depends on the lure and the fish you are tryng to catch.

Remember the lure represents an easy mean for a predator fish, so irratic speeds, change of direction are important for sucess. Think what a fish might look like if it was sick of injured.

Troppo - now seriously.

You want the lure to be an easy target.

Some boaties still tell me that a kayak could not possibly go fast enought to effectively troll a lure.

But then you need to ask but one simple question. At the speeds that some boats troll lures, if a fish even see's the lure - what must it think?

- that's lures on speed or steriods.......

Chaps

I wanted to say thanks for this line. I have been trolling a couple of Rapalas from Balmoral up to Middle Head across to Grotto Point and back to Balmoral via the Balmoral beach club for the last few weekends on my own until I at least caught a couple so i could hold my head up with the illustrious Peril, Kraley & Gatesy  .

All I have caught for my troubles is the worlds smallest yellowtail & the world's dumbest flatty. :?

Now I know the problem  I have been trying to troll as fast as I could paddle - now I will adopt a more leisurely approach.
If anyone says i'm lazy I can simply look over at them in a condescending fashion & say "no mate i'm trolling" 8)

Thanks for the advice

regards
David

Hiya guys and gals. Can now post as I have a kayak: bought a Cobra Pro Fisherman two weeks ago! Ye Ha!
ANyway can I suggest before everyone paddles very slowly that it's a horses for courses situation.
For example, Rapala CD's, to me, are a minnow made for fairly fast trolling/retrieve speeds. To me they are not working their best at snails pace. But a bream lure, like the SX-40, is the opposite; they are generally made for s-l-o-w retrieves/trolling so no wonder they blow out when someone is giving the heart a work out on the paddle. Just my two cents anyway.
I'm busily tying up some trolling flies (Murphy's Law means I stuffed my back a few days after buying my yak) which should be great for kayak trolling as they work from stationary to as fast as you can paddle. Hope to have enough to send a bunch to the moderators _ maybe they can hand em out to some members here _ in thanks for all the valuable info gleened from perving at AKFF for several months. Make em by tying up a Squidgy Resin Head jighead; voila a great trolling (and casting if you throw rope) fly at an all up cost of about $2 a fly. Making yakka, whitebait, pillie and slimey versions.
cheers

Welcome back Bombie. Would be keen to join you one morning around Dee Why to see how to target the area. I also now feel as if I'm not the only person in Sydney with a Pro Fisherman, though I'm undoubtedly the clumsiest.

Do you have a GPS? About 1-1.5 knots. Which is very very slow but it works.
I have caught Mackeral/Bonito trolling faster but nice and slow for most.
Cheers,

Welcome Bombora and congratulations on the yak.

Your home made lures sound really interesting. Have they produced results? I would love to see some step by step photos as to how you are making them. Whadda reckon?

Hiya Peril and JT, thanks for the welcome and hope I didn't sound like a know-it-all tosser in my first post. Just think ya can't make a generalisation about minnow troll speed!
JT I'm gonna send as promised a half dozen or so trolling flies _ maybe to Peril? what ya reckon? _ to pass on to forum members to use/abuse. Maybe someone can take some pix (I'm not didgi-ed up at the mo, spent the cash on the yak) and put em on the site.
Pretty damn easy to make.
Buy a packet of Squidgy resin head jigheads, put in fly vice, tie on tail of your choice, coat tail bindings with head cement, dry and voila! Then go fishing! If I can make em anyone can. Cost is one of the big bonuses. I added up the cost on the weekend and can make one for the princely sum of approx $1.50! Not so painful to snag.
Haven't used em off a yak but they were pretty deadly trolled off a mate's boat. The resin head (have also tied a couple with a twist of lead wire along the shank under the tail bindings for windier days) gives lovely dipping motion at low trilling speeds.
Size of the ones I tied on the weekend and gonna send to Peril (if that's OK) better suited to open water/inshore/bombies/washes and the lower harbour. They have either a No1 or 1/0 hook. Also reckon they would be a bit safer for a yaker with a thrashing fish in his/her lap than a minnow full of trebles. Also better for the fish if you release.
Hiya Peril, how's the Pro Fisherman going? You happy. Loved your cutomisations!
Just a little frustrating that my back is stuffed at the mo; only took mine to narra lake twice before the back got stuffed. So keen to do over Long Reef. Gotta a bee in my bonnet about some snapper on jigs! Hope I will be back to OK in about a month. More fly tying I suppose. What do you reckon about sending you the flies, or another moderator? PM with an address?
Cheers

Check your PMs Mate. That's a great offer. I'll take some pics then distribute them to the local inshore yakkers. If anyone wants one, then PM me.

Very happy with the Pro Fisherman. Really keen to start playing with it along the beaches when the weather settles down and I get some time. At the moment I don't feel that I've fully tested it as I've stuck to doing the sorts of things that I did on the tempo. The Pro Fisherman certainly makes all of those things a lot easier (once I got my balance) and no more stuffing around with a leccy. Can also put it on my Corolla which makes life easier all round.

Hope you're back on the water soon. Keen to pick your brain for inshore fishing and fishing around the surfzone. I know you have a lot to offer tyros like myself
