Hi all,

For the last six or seven months, I have had my transducer sixaflexed to the hull, with various results, from quite good, to fairly poor.

I ripped the transducer out the other day, whilst fishing, and now have mounted it to operate wet. The hull of the tempo fisherman has quite deep "U" profiles, and I have a PVC Rectangular box, sixaflexed in, and have topped it up with water. I hope to test this at Scarborough later in the week.
I might just put another blob of sixaflex on top, just to hold it in place during transit.

Cheers all Andybear

Nice, Andybear. Do you need to run a bit of gladwrap over the top and hold it in place with a rubber band to help keep the water in? I have no idea really - just wondering.

Hi noboat and Troppo

Funny that you should draw me to the outboard transducer mount. That is what I had in the first place. I doubt if my first posts are still around, but I used to have PVC Pipe and elbows hanging off the back, and the wiring was all held in place with velcro, for removal when not in use. It worked really well, but was a bit too untidy, even for me. dont think I will worry about glad wrap or anything, at least half of the water should remain in the well, even if it gets rough.

Cheers all Andybear

Herewith edit: I also have an identical section, that I can fuse onto the top of that section, and make it twice as deep if required, but I have a good feeling that it will be ok..... If not a letter to Santa regarding an upgrade

Thanks for the feedback Andybear. I have no idea how much water is needed for it to work. When ya test it, let us know.

Hi All!

I use that same idea. But I used a container with a clip on lid and srewed the transducer to the lid. I also cut the bottom out of the container and gule it to my kayak. It works very well, but after some time the container comes away from the kayak. I just have to try some better gule.
Hope this help on what to do with the transducer.

All the best Adam.

Hi Adam,

Welcome to the forum. Glad to hear that your transducer mount worked initially at least. You will find that there are very few things that will hold on to plastic kayaks, and glues are not normally one of those things. Most members have had good results with Sikaflex291. Make sure you prepare the surface with coarse sandpaper, and metho first, and then you should get a good bond.

Good fishing Cheers Andybear

Hi Dave,
Thanks for asking, but the day I was going to test the transducer, my cart fell apart, and I got miffed off, and called it a day! It was the missis birthday, and I thought perhaps the fishin' Gods were angry.

I hope to test the wet mount next Monday, I have not listed it as a fishing trip yet, but if the weather is looking good, and I can get certain jobs about the house done, I will be on the water, and the report will follow. Sorry about the delay. There is something I have noticed though, and that is the ticking sound seems to be louder when the transducer is wet. I am taking this to be a good omen that perhaps the water helps the sound to be transmitted. I could hardly hear it at all when it was dry mounted!

Gotta go, cheers Andybear

Hi
For me the simplest method is the best. I use a freezer bag, fill it up with sea water, drop the thru hull transducer in, tie two ends and it sits on the bottom of the boat. I too have had it glued on, it came off. I find this cheap method to work better as the whole transducer can be removed from the boat when not in use and rinsed to stop the connections from corroding. I have never had a trouble with it, even in really rough water.

Welcome Azza good to have you with us mate and a nice fleet you have.

Only one thing puzzles me, why not put the trannie in a bag of freshwater and have no fears of corrosion as rinsing would not be required just let it dry

Yeah, that end is fully sealed and designed to live in a bilge. It's the other end with the electrical connection that I worry about, cos when it was glued into the boat I couldn't easily keep the salt off it, or moisture in general even if it was fresh water that the boat had been in.
The other reason for sea water in the bag is that I live on Kangaroo Island, we have only tank water and its nearly all gone (until it rains) :( . So i'm getting pretty stingy with it!

Gday Andy,

I bought a sounder the other day and heaven forbid i read the instructions (after i couldn't get it to work) and for a throught hull mount you epoxy it to the hull.
I have since done this and the sounder seems to work great.

Cheers Dave.

RE: the ticking sound, i don't think thier meant to do that you may have nicked the power line to the transducer so as the pulse of power runs to it you here the short or tick.

Hi Dave,

One of my first attempts at through the hull was using epoxy, but it gave me the worst result of all..... a very early failure. I hope it works for you, sometimes it is really good, for some yaks.

I was pretty happy with the wet mount last time I used it (have not been fishing for ages now) I found my display more black rather than shades of grey, but I may have messed with my settings. Its good enough, till I get my Prowler... next year......perhaps...

I have always heard the ticking sound with mine, even when the transducer was brand new. You can hear it loudly if you put the transducer in water - e.g a glass, hence I guess it is the sound pulse emitted.

Andy,

Does that mean that your Viking Tempo will soon be hitting retirement? Jeez I'm sure you'll be needing that space for the new yak. I'll tell you what I might be persueded to take it off your hands for say $100 .... ok ok $120 but thats my final offer.... :D. I'll even throw in an extra $10 for the troublesome fish finder!

Cheers,

Hi Red

You could have offered me some magic beans as well, I'm no fool you know. Last time I sold a yak, I got ummm .... squillions and squillions of dollars...um hang on, I think there is a tax man on line.... yeah, thanks for the offer, but shes not for sale yet. I will probably ask for just a little bit more, its not the greed, its just a matter of saving face if SWMBOAAT enquires

Cheers mate Andybear

I Just thought I would mention, that, I took the yak out today for a fishing trip, and this time, had the setup done the way I like it, and the result was very good, except where the water is less than 1.3m deep

Cheers all Andybear
