My day off yesterday and a woke to a beautiful day hardly a breathe of wind, ideal for a paddle. The lad and I went down to Seacliff around 8.30a.m. perfect conditions unloaded the gear and discovered I had the wrong tackle box. I was so annoyed, last time I forgot it all together but this time I had my surf fishing gear instead. I saw the box when packing and assumed it was the right one, I've learnt now to assume nothing and double check. I had a Halco chrome lure that I had so I decided to tow that behind me to see if any snook would take it. My lad went home and I asked him to find my other tackle box. I paddled for a while with no luck when my lad phone to say he found the gear. I had also forgot to put some overpants on to stop me getting burnt, so I asked him to come back. I eventually got my yo-zuri hard body and away I went, I trolled for awhile with no luck so I decided to head out to my squidding spots. I pulled up to let out my squid lures and my line with the hard body drifted around my rudder and I couldn't get it free. I then had to paddle to shore to untangle it, I was so annoyed. I went out again and I drifted with the squid lures and was flicking out the yo-zuri lure I eventually got a squid but no more. I hooked on to a snook while drifting but it was too small and later I had a hit from a bigger one but they went shy after that. After nearly 4 hours I had enough and I rang my boy to come down and we swapped places. He paddled around for a couple of hours and got 2 snook , 1 at 60cm and the other 65cm. Smoked them that night for tea.
Has anyone else got their line caught around the rudder?

Brian, sounds like a frustrating day, but at least you were having a go and the 'team' was rewarded.

I have had the line catch on my rudder but it has come free easily enough. If I was out far enough I would consider jumping in to free it - after all I've gone in often enough :)

Just about every trip   I've tried and tried to get it loose - rudder up, rudder down, lean to the left, turn to right....bugger, head to shore and clear it that way.

Captain - do you have a blue yak? - a mate of mine was in a boat of seacliff yesterday and he said there was a bloke in a blue 'canoe' (don't you hate it when people refer to our specialised kayaks as canoes!! ) - he got a few snook but the size has gone down a lot in the last couple of weeks.

Hi Fisher,
Yes it is blue, was your mate in a SIK and come from Seacombe Heights area? I saw him when I was driving down Seacombe Rd. I saw him on your secret snook spot and did come close on one occassion. I had no luck there but that is where my son got his 2 snook.

Hi PoddyMullet,
I think he was fairly happy about it but didn't rub it in too much. I was just glad he had success as he's half way through his year 12 exams and needed this as a tension breaker. They were nice smoked but I've had them cooked fresh on the BBQ and they've been delicious. I once had snook given to me and I cooked them up and it was the worst fish meal I've ever had. I don't know how old they were but I suspect they weren't very fresh. Better to have fun catching them yourself then you know how fresh they are.
