Hi , I am new to the forum & new to the sport.

I have been following the forum as a guest for a while & have worked my way up to a question - do you guys buy your tackle over the net ? & if so what is(are) the best site(s)? it seems to me that you really can't consider your self a paid up member of AKFF unless you have an SX 40 from my reading.

By the way almost plucked up the courage to join the guys out from Balmoral on Sunday but after seeing the gear & setups you chaps have I think I am still in the minor leagues - very impressive.

By the way still looking at an easy way to put the kayak on a sedan roof ( low profile rola racks) without having a hear attack or a destroyed back.

I think everyone will agree with me when I say there is no such thing as being too "minor league". It's generally more fun in a group so next time, come along with who ever is heading out, you'll love it!

As for getting the kayak on the roof. Have a look at the posts on loading bars. There's some nifty, yet simple, set ups to get the kayak up without requiring a trip to hospital :)

Gday TB2 - Welcome. Theres several options for getting your yak onto the car. I have a commodore sedan and use my cart to get it on the roof - its easy to use and works very well. I'll probably muck around with loading bars eventually, but this seems to work ok at the moment.

G'day David. I haven't resorted to buying tackle over the net...yet! However I know that theres several good online dealers that sell all sorts of things and generally cheaper than via a tackle shop - however postage does add to the cost so factor that in when deciding. Theres also Ebay which has good cheap options and pre-loved gear as well.

I guess I'd rather have a look at stuff 'in the flesh' before buying it - especially with reels and rods. Lures are probably different, especially the proven performers, but again the difference is only a few bucks and unless your buying truckloads of them, I reckon the cost benefits dont really stack up..

Re loading your yak - what sort of yak, and how tall are you? I have a 4WD but then again I'm 6'3" and 100kg so don't have too much trouble hoisting the yak on top of my racks.

Welcome David,

As the others said, there aren't many who've been doing this for a long time so just join in the learning experience and fun.

By the way, I have a loadbar that fits the Rola Sports Racks. Don't need it any more since purchasing a smaller yak. PM me if interested

Welcome David don't concern yourself at meeting the other blokes on an outing.

I have had a lot of fishing experience from shore, but was/am a total dickhead with the kayak having only discovered the sport 12 months ago myself.

Have met a 20 odd akffers now on the water and in every case its been a great experience and one to enjoy

Hi TB2,

Welcome aboard mate. ditto to everything the other guys said. :D

Hobie Vic mate,
Whats an SX 40? Seriously
SX 40 s are, in my humble opinion, the most productive and versatile hard body lure ever made  (That oughta get some bights)

You can get them here
:D

They are not cheap but I reckon they are worth every cent

Not much of a pic but it is the best I can do.

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. If you are desperate for the old content of this particular post, it is available below base64 encoded and bzip2 compressed.

Red, I'm not real sure. it doesn't seem to matter round here what the colour is. Other blokes swear by the blue gills and I use a couple but I don't think they catch any better than the others. Not here anyway.

Over the last few months, I have spent several hundred dollars trying to find a competitive lure  and nothing I have tried has been as effective or anywhere near it. I'm probably doing something wrong with the others but I just like to paddle round slow and drag a couple of lures while having a quiet beer. :D These work better than anything else I have tried like that. I wish now I had spent that money on SX 40s & 60s.

Fresh Water, I really like the ones with orange or gold colouring best. (snapper love that colour too)

Sorry for hijacking your thread JB2

Hi David
Welcome aboard. As the other guys said it's important you join other yak fishermen not only from the social aspect of the sport, but also because it's safer and you learn a hell of a lot from everyone. The amount and type of gear you have means nothing, and no one has better gear than the other. It's whatever works for you and suits your purpose and budget.
Keep an eye out for the trips section and see when people are organising to go out. Then see whether you can join and just rock up. Everyone gives one another a hand and the days are great fun.
Regarding the roof racks, I use kayak mounts that just fit on the roof racks and allow the kayak to be easily slid on and slid off. Have a look in Ebay under "kayak".
Hope to see you soon.
Cheers
