I do mainly line fishing from my yak but I always carry a mask, fins and a polespear with me just in case the opportunity presents itself.

If anyone else is interested in spearfishing in the Sydney area please let me know - I'd love to organise a trip (I find that spearfishing solo is always a bid daunting - I seem to have the theme music from Jaws constantly in the back of my head).

I'd be up for a trip sometime over summer. Have all the gear but it's been gathering dust for a few years  ...

Used to do pretty well off Shark Island in Cronulla and around Shelly/Oak park Beaches spearing - heaps of leatherjacket, a few crays and various other species as well.

Probably sometime after Xmas I'd be up for it 8)

sounds great - I could use a bit of local knowledge - at the moment I am just guessing (only been in Sydney a short time).

Let me know when you want to go - I am on leave for around 4 weeks from mid Dec - mid Jan so I am pretty flexible.

I'd be in for this once I have had a go and have worked out which end of the spearpole to shove at the fish. Give me a month or so to get some practice. I might be a bit of a liability fresh out of the box

No worries JT, it shouldn't take you more than about 30 seconds to get the hang of it because there is only one simple rule - pointy end goes towards fish, blunt end towards people.

Just thought I would share my latest catch - I know some of you like reading the diving reports.

I must say it is the biggest cuttlefish I have come across - it was super heavy (a couple of kilos) - and it spewed ink everywhere (the fish went balistic underwater with the smell of the ink)

Speared at Long Bay (Malabar) about 150 from shore in around 4m of water (everyone's always welcome to come with me – I am out most weekends so just drop me a PM). It just sat there looking at me - presumably it thought it was well camouflaged against the kelp and I wouldn't spot him. I haven't eaten it yet - I ate a leatherjacket and a goatfish that night and froze the cuttlefish. I'll be making it into salt and pepper squid and will post the results.

Hey Matty, welcome to the site. The weather looks a bit dodgy at the moment, but maybe in the period 14-24 Dec might be better. Let me know when you're available (I have the two weeks off work) and we can arrange something. Hopefully the visibility has improved by then.
