My brother in law and old Army mate Pete is visiting us from Melbourne at the moment. He's done a bit of paddling but not in an SOT so I thought I'd introduce him to the Espri and our local beach. Usually it's just too boisterous for me to get out from Sunshine but yesterday it looked do-able so after brekky we loaded up the two Espris on my Sierra and headed for the nearby doggy beach. A few pics will help with the description.

We got back in OK, then Pete offered to take a few pics with my new camera (in waterproof case) if I'd go back out and do a demo run. How could I refuse such an offer, so out I go...

Sunshiner those pics showed the enjoyment of kayaks in the surf and are for me the best seen on the forum to date.

Your mate climbing the wave shows the exhilaration of the action that day

Notice you've covered the rear well on both espri's thats a top idea

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. If you are desperate for the old content of this particular post, it is available below base64 encoded and bzip2 compressed.

JT, the camera is a Fuji FinePix A500 enclosed in a case rated to 3m underwater. The camera and case package is presently (or was) on sale at Harvey Norman for around $260.

Richo, glad you like the pics. I do too.

When I first got my Espri I recognized that it lacked flat deck space on which to easily attach things (Gaff, knife, etc, etc -- the list grows). And I needed a fish box too so I bought a sheet of six ply for $10 and cut two pieces out of it. The larger piece covers the front of the tank well and the smaller piece the back. Both are held down with bungee elastic and the front one is openable to the front, and serves as the doorway to the tank well cum fishbox. The rear one is openable to the rear and serves as a convenient door through which to remove the fish once ashore. The openings can be secured so they don't come open at the wrong time eg if I get inverted in the surf. The resulting flat platform is a very convenient attachment point for anything you don't need to be able to see to use -- just reach around and grab the gaff for example...

YakAtak, "Is the legs over the sides a surfers trick?" Pete thought he'd improve his stability by putting his legs out the side but he also disastrously increased the drag. The next pic, which I didn't post, shows him about to fall out after being pushed backwards by the wave. I personally wouldn't advocate legs over the side, especially when leaving the beach...

Good work Kev, is always great fun getting out in the surf - its a happy coincedence that bad fishing days usually mean good surf days so there's always something to do. Bad luck about the fish, the photo brings back memories of the trip we had out that way chasing the Tuna around.

As for yak surfing just don't do my trick - the other day after a few runs in and out I was battling particularly hard to get through surf zone and just wasn't making progress. Copped about 5 waves but struggled out eventually - when I get out there I notice they yak is tippier than usual. I looked behind to see the bung gone and the rear of the yak underwater and emitting bubbles as the water continued to flow in
