Hi all, just a short post here today. Went out for my second fishing expedition on Barry Cuda (Hobie Outback) this morning off Sothgates beach in Geraldton.
The plan was to head out to the offshore reefs and drop some baits around the reefy sections. This involved a bit of pedalling, so I'm looking forward to developing big muscles in my legs
Conditions weren't too bad out there this morning, with a 2 metre swell on the drop. Unfortunately no fish today, just a couple of nice bites and one good run, but the fish dropped the bait unfortunately.
The pro crayfishermen are out in force, as per attached pic and I kept out of their way. It sure is easy to find good reefy spots - just head for where they drop their pots
Anyway, it was good to get out for a good 4 hour pedal and each trip improves my stability etc on the yak. Next time I will catch something good, I know it

Cheers

Cuda.

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. Nice report, thanks for that :)

Got a few questions for you :

How does the Outback handle the open water?

What bait were you using?

I have heard reports on the Adventure and Sport out in swell but am yet to read a report on the Outback slaying the conditions 8)

G'day Red & Paffoh. To answer your questions, the bait I was using was whole herring on snelled hooks, or Tommy Ruff as I think you Eastern staters call them - big baits for big fish was the thinking
The Outback handled the swell without any problems. The swell wasn't such a big factor inside the reef, more the chop, but I never felt like I was going to tip at any stage :) .
I wouldn't like to attempt a surf launch with any sort of a shore break however  I'm still getting my launch technique perfected at this stage - keep forgetting to drop the rudder when I start pedalling

Hey Cuda,

You guys get some fairly decent dhuies up there don't you?

Word has it that the dhuies will come in close on the reefs, and the best place to start looking is around the cray pots, as they love their crays. So maybe some nice octopus baits may get you some good action?

Yeah Yakabe, you are on the money there mate  I have some nice whole squid in the freezer, but some nice long dangly occy tentacles should entice the Dhuis too  In a few weeks the "white" crays will be on the move and that should boost my chances a bit 8). Just have to be careful around the reefs when the swell and sea is up.[/quote]

Hey Cuda

Nice report mate!

Have you got a bike?
Hi Aleg, I don't have a bike, as I have a short walk to work and don't really have time to get out for a ride.

I'd be more than happy to head up that way and take a trip out with you as well. When do you reckon your next one will be
Hi Dugongstorey, this weekend looks like being quite windy - 16 - 24 knot winds & 2.5 - 2.0 metre swell, so I might have to check out the Greenough River and catch & release a few Bream & whatever else may be biting. Will PM you when the conditions look better, although I will be away for a while in mid December - heading over to the Gold Coast for a nice holiday :D
I certainly won't knock back a bit of company out on the water however, all are welcome
