South Coast Salmon

Took the yak into the open ocean for the first time on the long weekend just north of Jervis Bay. We launched close to 6am in near perfect conditions with hardly any swell or wind on Sunday morning (different story in the afternoon).

I went out with my brother who knows the area really well armed with SP’s, some small bib minnows and a bait combo including pillies and tuna in the hope of finding bream salmon or trevally.

Anchored the yak about 100 - 200 metres offshore near a nice reef & berleyed up. Things were pretty quiet but after about 15 minutes a few stray salmon arrived and the fun began. After throwing a few lures unsuccessfully, I swapped to pillie fillets, pretty much immediately I hooked up on what I thought was a bream, but after a solid run I knew it was either a thumping bream or something else. I was fishing 3 kg mono. It took me a little while to get the fish close, with it running deep every time it caught sight of the yak, finally managed to tire him out & a nice ***** was the result.

1st Salmon ever, 1st fish on bait from yak. Heaps and heaps of fun. :D

Must say also that the cobra explorer went well, even thought conditions were little more than I experience in the river.
