Hey all, I was mucking around on a yak out the back of the surf a couple of weeks ago and thought "I'm feeling a bit squeamish" - kept on surfing and playing with the kids and really didn't think much more of it. The next weekend was again paddling away in the surf- this time much calmer and again - surely not seasick I said to myself but i was feeling a little like this in the guts. Now, I am probably more prone to "motion" type of sickness ( especially as a child - I'm 36 now) than some, and when I've been out on stinkboats I am one of the first to "go" if its rough. I see on these topics the very occasional reference to hurling, seasickness and was wondering how everyone else goes and if its a problem for some then what are the best solutions. Back when i crewed on a racing sailboat we used to take "Kwells" with good success but i heard that you cant get these anymore???. I'm keen to get out there and chase pelagics but don't want to burley with weet-bix :( :( :(

When i was younger i used to vomit occasionally but these days if i get sea sick i feel more of a motion effect... to the point were i cant even move, let alone function till im safe on dry land.

Never taken Kwells, every member of our familt takes 1 'Travelcalm' about 1hr before launch, i can be out for 5hrs + without feeling any effect in the deeper sea... get a slight case of cotton mouth for a short period of time.

We also carry 'Travel calm natural' to help the effects after getting seasick, but we havent needed it yet :)

I agree with Red, regular watching the horizon line gives the brain a stable platform to operate with and definately helps, and bland food like a hard boiled eggs etc

I agree with Red on this one, mainly because I saw an episode of Mythbusters a while back where they were looking at cures for motion sickness and ginger apparently was one of the more effective remedies they tried.
My uncle always espoused the virtues of an occy sandwich too (raw that is)  If that doesn't sort you out nothing will

Cheers all 8)

Have seen some guys suffer terribly. From their reports, Tavecalm original & caffeine enhanced works - Travecalm ginger doesn't help.

If you do suffer, you are probably best off taking your tablets before you head off as per the instructions, & as required.

Another thing that can help is ice-cold ginger beer to sip on the water. Whether it's the ginger or the fact that you are concentrating on something else or it's a placebo, I don't know, but it does seem to help people.

Have always suffered motion sickness and personally find that Kwells do nothing to help. My mother obn the other hand finds that make her much worse than seasick and is lucky to be out of bed 2 days after ingestion.

Travecalm on the other hand work for both of us and don't have the dreaded after effects.

My stepfather is the exact opposite and as long as he takes a Kwell an hour before launch he is happy and smiling all day.

Wow, thanks all for the input. I know see that quite a few yakkers get the dreaded seasickness which really was a surprise to me when I first felt it. It makes sense though now - person in boat plus swell = sick (for some sometimes). i suppose despite all the advantages of using kayaks we cant avoid this one. Thanks again to all. Red - Espirit at the top of the list at the moment. Puchase prior to January planned. :) :)

When I was in the Solomon Islands up in the jungles, one of the bush people told me that when they go to sea they chew on ginger (which grows huge over there) to reduce sea sickness. That would have to be strong stuff! Raw root ginger. I don't mind crystalised ginger (it's in sugar) but I don't know if it helps stop seasickness just tastes good.

A coupla hot pies with peas and a softdrink help keep the stomach settled, don't they?
