For anyone who hasn't been following this story, two fishermen (a 30 y/o and a 19 y/o) who fired off around 100 shots at a colony of fur seals on the remote island of Kanowna near Wilson's Prom faced court last Friday. Apparently some Deakin Uni researchers were on the island and witnessed the August 06 attack (they were there without the knowledge of the fishermen). The guys were seen beering up and laughing at their antics, which killed an unconfirmed number of seals on the rocks (at least two were dead). The 30 y/o pleaded guilty to nine charges (as well as having had some dropped) and was sentenced to 6 months jail to be served as an intensive corrections order and fined $5000. The 19 y/o will reappear in court in March 07 to plead guilty to some charges and defend others.

Makes ya wonder in outrage :!:

Yes, its dumb arse pratts like that, that killed off (effectively) my old hobby of hunting pest animals. In sensible hands shooting is a very safe hobby, much less risky than fishing, but lame brains like that.......I'm outer here

Cheers all Andybear :(

The sentence is laughable...... :?

It should have involved some hard jail time, not a glorified counselling session, and $5000 fine?!?!......pitiful.......

The fine should have been ten times this much.

Penalties like this send the wrong message to the kinds of people who break these laws and others like them.

I recall reading about it when it happened and being very angry about it. Glad to hear that at least something was done - little as that was.

I guess added to the sentence has been a fair bit of media coverage and shaming. The fella who has faced court did plead guilty..but I still wonder if he owned any remorse for his actions and not just remorse for being caught. Let's hope so.
