Scupper and I headed out this morning to have a go at some of the local snook (short finned pike) - its a bit early in the season but we had a whisper that there were some about - in times past we've managed to pull some monsters out of this area. My first fish was a nice 63cm fish (I think - will need to check the pics when I put them up tomorrow), but this is small for this area. Managed a couple of smaller fish, and then Scupper scored a 68cm version - nice, but not what we were there for. Persevered for a while but only got some unusually small fish (55 - 60cm), that is until Scupper hooked a fantastic 92cm fish - unfortunately the only big fish for the day, but a nice submission to the 'Hall of Fame" - well done Scupper (I just hope the pics work tomorrow :p
All fish caught on berkley soft plastics, minnows of various sizes.
Also picked up a nice Tommy ruff (Aust Herring) - 27cm, a bit embarrasing submitting it for Hall of Fame consideration against that monster snook

Wow, 92 cm Snook! I've had a glimpse of one around that size but lost it before getting it aboard the yak. Well done on such a magificent fish. Bloody good eating too, great in both the frypan and the smoker.

Well done guys. 92cm is a fine snook. Do you guys smoke all your snook as I hear they are not much chop to freeze?

Yakabe.

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. Well, after having a feed of fresh snook last night, I tend to think smoked might be the way to go. Scupper smokes his in one of those small commercially available smokers, and its great.

Hey JW - I'll swap you a snook trip for a bream trip :)

We trolled for awhile but didn't get a touch - mind you I'm not sure I had the right lures - I was trying the halco scorpions which are reknown for bream, but not sure about snook. I do know some of the yozuri lures are deadly in this area, in fact I know there are a couple still out there on big fish somwhere

We managed to get the fish on soft plastic minnows - just by drifting with the wind and keeping the sp close to the bottom. They can be touchy though, so best to vary techniques.

I had a look at an AFN fishing guide to see what size snook grow to, it claimed 1.1m. Scuppers 92cm fella is well and truely at the upper limit if that's the case. Again well done mate  :D

Glad somebody revived this thread or I would never have seen it.

I assume that spring is the time for these bigger snook? There are plenty of small ones around at the moment - only half this size.

Interesting how much variation there is in people's taste in fish. My wife and I love fresh cooked snook & I even reckon it freezes OK.

Variety in taste is a great thing - otherwise there would only be one wine label!
