Been getting a lot of junk email lately and it has been niggling me as to why.

Lately I have noticed some strange names in the 'latest joined'. The last one is (at time of post) "TinyPussySex".

Looked up their details and clicked on their website and went straight to a porn site. This also happened the other night with another 'latest' (without such an obvious handle).

Just had a look in the 'Members' list, filtered to show the latest joined, and there would 6 or so joined since the 19th.

Is there any way of blocking out these scum? I believe that there is some young members of AKFF, and a chance exposure to this crap could / would be disasterous to both the youth and the site.

This is a great website and I would hate to see anything detrimental happen to it. I don't have the technical expertise to help with weeding out these phlegm, but would not hesitate to knock on their door.

Which leads me to wonder if these scum are trawling this site for email addresses. Has anyone else noticed an increase in junk lately?

It is probably too late now, but I will delete the email address that I have in my profile and see if that makes a difference.

Yeah , even more garbage.

Perhaps having to be approved first before they can put up a profile would fix it. Stopping access to the members list unless signed in will help too.

As soon as it started happening i removed the email from the visible details, i'm getting nothing in the junk for my email yet.

Thanks Scotty.

I read the link and didn't realise how much effort you blokes have to put in to regulate the Site.

Keep up the great work. If I had the capabilities, I would gladly assist.

An official government estimation is that over 99% of all emails sent during 2007 will be spam - this is serious, the company who hosts my web site warned me about this.

I'd suggest you all ensure you have the best anti-viral program you can afford, do regular span searches on your PC, have a firewall & don't disclose personal information over the internet.

This is all mainly because Australian banks do not have world standard span protection - so a lot of what you will recieve next year will be from "banks"

Gday Hard Yakka,
You don't have to worry to much about your email on here if you log in as a guest you can't see any of that stuff anyway, and they can't access as members untill i believe the administrator has approved them. (some one correct me if i'm wrong).

Cheers Dave

Yeah. 2007 is going to be a big year for spam and spim (spam instant msgs)...

I work in IT and some of my customers are pretty important governmental and institutional types, and I just can't believe some of the stuff they do and call "secure".

Anyway, the best thing to do is have multiple email addresses. Get a gmail or hotmail type address for any forums that you join, or anything that is likely to be public, and keep another address (ie your isp address) for important things, like your internet banking and such.

I can't tell u how many bank and ebay emails i've got to my "other" addresses.

Oh, and NEVER click on links in dodgy looking emails.. Even if it's a legit looking banking email, always login manually to the website.

Cheers

Ivan
