Kathy and I got off Flinders Island last week for 2 days...woo hoo 5 months without a shopping fix. We checked out some tackle shops and stocked up on some sp's and metals for chasing salmon and anything else. We went into a large marine outlet that sells boating and fishing gear and asked a sales girl about fishfinders for the kayak........ a simple request you would think, she then attempted to steer us to a humminbird smartcast system..... and avoided any other fishfinders. I asked about the FF 120 that was on sale and ex shop demo but was told the display was too pixalated to get any decent reading.mmmmm and i am thinking the smartcast is too damn small to read while paddling but held my tongue. I asked about colour fishfinders but was told the display is affected by sunlight...... but she did ask one of the other guys there about the colour fishfinders but by this time I decided that no matter what happened I would not buy any large ticket items from them... if we go back there i will certainly get the bargain lures but not much else. After a couple of days in launceston it was a pleasure to get back to peace and quite but will miss the decent coffee and the choice of eating places. I wont mention the marine outlet but it is a large one in launceston and is named after the river  . It is easy to forget how busy it gets when there is only 800 or so people on the island and you see that many in an hour or so in town.

Hmmm yes I know where you mean and despite all their advertising I have had 2 bad experiences there, both times I have gone in and have vowed to never return no matter how good the specials were.

They even had the hide to say they were the only Kayak fishing specialists in Tassie last time I was there and when I said I was looking for a Hobie they did nothing but tell me why I shouldn't get one. And not that anyone of them there at the time actually kayak fished.

I won't go back there after that experience

I sure do envy you living on Flinders. I've been there for a week some years back and loved it. Like Coles Bay without the people and bullsh*t. Maybe the rest of the Tassie Yakkers will come over one day...
BTW, I know which retailer you are referring to. Bought an Alvey sidecast from them about ten years ago, good prices but average service I thought. Anyway, do you need a fishfinder on Flinders? The scaly, swimmy things everywhere aren't they?
