Went to a roof rack store ( Roof rack city, ACT ) and got some Thule aero racks fitted, they had the make/model in stock and paid $250 - $300 fitted ( took 1 hr or so on the spot ), gave me some pretty goodtips and i now strap my yak on with confidence.

Needing to carry 2 kayaks, total weight near 60kg, on a car without rain gutters, I need to have track mounted racks installed. Due to total width of kayaks flat together (although probably end up on holders), went for the wider bars and for the weight. They are Rhino tradesman bars - $470 installed. Ouch.

I got Rhino Racks tradesman style. Cost $250 or so, can't remember exactly. I put em on and take em off myself. Uses a special key to undo alan key bolts. Now that I have em adjusted right, takes about 5 min but feels like 50 when I am itching to get packed and get on the water.

I like the tradesman style since it gives a longer bar than the aerodynamic ones and I want room for 2 yaks up there. I also have the holder things, can't remember what they are called. Ah yes, cradles. It means my yak can feel comfortable travelling right way up instead of being tortued by being upside down. Bad thing to train em to be upside down all the time.

I sometimes put my rods in my yak on vehicle, wrapped in some old nylon tent fabric and tied up so they are protected. Have also put sleeping bags in the yak to carry them just to leave a bit more space insde my vehicle when going camping.

Finally got my racks, had to get pad mounts ouch. Worse quote fitted was $395.00 by roof racks galore, the best was by a mobile bloke who came to my work and knocked it over $330.00 Accurate vehicle accessory fitters. Either way it still hurts. Oh well at least I'll get on the water this weekend. :)

Good one Shayned. Once ya on the water, it doesn't hurt anymore.

I felt the same way when getting my racks. But once I realised my baby (the yak) was safe with my roof racks 'n cradle and I was splashing out on the water having huge fun, I did not mind having splashed out a (painful) bit of money on the racks.

Have fun!!!!!! And yaking really is cheap compared to other sports/hobbies so ya saving in the long run (that's what I tell myself as I contemplate spending more money).

$395 sounds a bit steep but $330 with the roof pads looks good. I got Rhino Racks for the Disco from ARB for about $290 after a negotiated discount and fitted them myself (they charged $25 normally). Wasn't too difficult but the 2nd bar went on a lot quicker than the first one.

Good to see you have them now. Its one of the more essential accessories any yakker needs.
