Hey guys

Just checking out roof rack options for my Hyundai Accent 5 door hatch. The only ones I can find for it are $240 and $299. I will only need the to transport my yak as I have a box trailer for anything else I want to transport. Just don't want the hassle of towing trailer long distances to launch my yak and I always hear reports of trailers getting stolen at boat ramps.

I dont really want to attach anything through my roof as that is the only fitting options for the roof racks I can find for my car. On the viking website there is some you just lay on your roof and then tied through your doors, but how do you tie off the kayak on them? Plus they are also $190. Anyone got anything similar to this that they can recommend for me. It is an added expense that I didn't expect when setting my budget for the kayak.

I know boat stands for Bring Out Another Thousand but wasn't expecting it for the kayak as well!!!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Wayne, Sorry but I don't know of any way to put the yak on the roof short of fixed or removable racks. You just missed out on the set that Dallas was selling.

The Kwikrack ones on the Viking site look OK - think I will buy a set for my other car. They have rings either side to loop your tiedowns through, so the tiedowns don't have to go through the car.

Occy you are what I call a simple genious. No offence meant. You make the best inventions out of the simplest things.

Your roof rack doesn't mark the roof of your car in any way?

Here's the solution that Occy gave me. $12 per noodle things and $5 per strap. $34 in total. Bargain.

Looks the goods - but can you tell me if the roof buckles at all with the weight of the yak, or do the straps through the cabin interfere with head room at all? cheers

Mate if you ran a cord or rope through the car at likely strap spot you could test your own headroom for your model vehicle.
Don't believe kayak weight would ever be a factor with the internal ribbing they have in roof for safety reasons, push your headlining up and feel them, and lay a kayak on a blanket and trial, then strap near a vehicle rib.
I ferried my espri on my wifes 2 door honda civic with ropes and blanket on one occasion with no problem

That looks very similar to my surf board soft racks that you can get from most decent surf shops. I think mine were $40 and have been used to transport up to four surfboards, so a kayak shouldn't be a problem. These do affect headroom in the car, but only because I'm quite tall.

I can imagine it affecting your headroom Flump. One look at ya avatar tells me ya hair would be getting in the way seeing as it sticks up so high. I don't have that problem - hair that is. :D

Hi Wayne,
Wecome to the forum. may I suugest you rethink the trailer idea (especially if you have one). I know towing can be a pain. Your trailer wont get stolen if you use a trailer lock.I bought one for 70$ from supa cheap and it locks the tow bar mount and the trailer so I know when I get back IT will be there. I put on a couple of old roof racks and DIY padded foam and some time down strapps and it works a treat. Total cost under $15 (second hand from garage sales. Also I find it a lot easier to unload from a trailer than from the roof of a car. I am in brisbane also so you are most welcome to look at my set up -Just PM me.
Good luck with whatever you decide. :D

I ordered my espri today and it is too long for my little trailer so I have no choice if the racks don't work out I'll have to buy proper ones.

Even the Espri on the roof is the same length as my car, but I would have hated to buy the nemo and then have regrets 6 month later that I didn't spend the extra $200 and get the better yak.

Wayne, good stuff mate. My P15 is a touch longer than the car but it doesn't cause any issues. The main thing is you get a yak suitable for your needs and by the sounds of thing the Espri is certainly that. Good luck with it all mate and post heaps of reports.

Catch ya Scott

Thanks for the roof rack idea occy. I just paid for my second hand Prowler 15 and was wondering how i'm going to get it home, lol. The car i'm using to transport the yak is a daweo Lanos (small little 2 door car), will this be a problem seem as though the P15 is 4.5 m's long?

Cheers

As well as the straps run a rope from bow to front bumper, and same at the stern end.
Also might be wise to put a rag on the rear of the yak to keep the law away from you, think you can overhang 1m with a flag at rear, but not sure.
I passed the police when I had the espri up on civic and they ignored me despite the overhang.

Glad to see you got yourself a P15 BJT - well done! My P15 looks big on my commodore, I also own a lanos and cannot imagine putting that yak on that car (although the lanos would make a useful trolley) Anyway mate, well done - grab some pics when its on the lanos - I might just swap cars with the missus! - and yes, straps front and back!

Occy,
You are a dead set genius. You just solved another of my little issues on the road towards yak ownership. Straight to the pool room with you old son.
