I was having problems with the fireline line snapping and was cursing at my ineptitude when casting or a bad batch of line until someone comented on that they had a problem similar and had nicks in the runners. so i had removed half a spool of fireline cursing the bad batch and loaded a new spool and the same problem resurfaced and thought maybe I should check the runners and not having a magnifying glass thought the chances were slim of finding a nick...until I could see where the line had been catching and fraying the line. So now do i try to find some fine abrasive to attempt to remove the nicks or retire the rod and then have an excuse to get a nother rod or get new runners fitted.... but the reel seat is also starting to feel like it is about throw it in and I have another rod by the same maker that the reel seat and holders rotated on the cork. So what is the best way to clean the burrs or nicks off the runners ? But if the rod keeps playing up..... NZ might find a rod covered in barnacles lapping the shore.

Shane, guides, except for the tip guide, are usually fairly easy to replace. Shave off the epoxy and cut the binding with a sharp knife. Use fine sandpaper to remove any remaining epoxy and you will have clean surface in which to fit the replacement guide.

Only worth it if you think there is enough life left in the rod. Sounds like you won't be buying any more of that brand/model. Tell me its not a Raider! (Thinking of buying one)

It is not a "raider" both rods are a japenese brand that start with O...... but I have to admit the rod has held up well to a heap of salmon and the odd Wrasse that has headed for the kelp or shelter and managed to extract them.. it is only a 1-3 kg rod and 4 or 6lb fireline has been used with a leader and at times it has lacked the brute strength to handle a good size salmon and some fancy hand and foot work has been needed to land a fish. maybe the rod can join a couple of the other retirees and look good in the rod rack
