6 mangoes (or maybe 7 - I never saw PhilipL but apparently he was out there somewhere!) ventured to Rickett's Point to be greeted with calm and overcast conditions - myself and Squidette, Grant and his dad Frank, and Kevin and his son Daniel. Plastics yielded a snotty trevalla for me early, and a few nice flatties for Michelle. Gee it was quiet - even a burley slick of epic proportions failed to generate much interest (although Squidette caught a pretty fish I couldn't identify - a type of wrasse I think, maybe a juvenile weed whiting - see pic below). When the wind rapidly picked up at around 10am it was a good excuse to head in - I had just caught a big garfish and tried to persist in the chop, but after losing another gar and having a big wave crash over the back of the yak and down my top, I headed for home, with a few hairy moments before beaching. It was fantastic to see a good turnout, but the way Ricketts has been fishing of late, it might be time to suss out some new spots  Look forward to seeing everyone at the BBQ next weekend :D

Sorry I missed you all - decided to troll north and work my way back. Picked up 2 very small pinkies and some kind of butterfly fish (broad black and white bars, size of a 250-300g pinkie). Sounded lots of schools of (small) fish but not many decent size individual fish.

Worked my way back around 9 but couldn't see anybody and thought everyone was already in - figured you must have gone round the point when I saw cars still there.

Might go down again this arvo to try for some squid

Looking forward to next weekend - hopefully, some other kids will turn out - mine are looking forward to it.

Firtst time that that Daniel has been out on the bay although he is well experienced on the river. He enjoyed the time although I was unsuccessful in raising anything in my berley trail. Wind really whipped up the waves as Squidder mentioned. Glad to see Squidette got back shortly after the waves came up as I was concerned seeing Squidder still bodding around amongst the whitecaps as we were packing up.

Philip my two kids (ages 14 and 11) will be there next weekend at the BBQ. Haven't worked out the logistics of an early fish beforehand then retrieving the family?

I am wondering how big your 'chop' is. You said a wave broke over the back of your yak and down your top. That is huge chop! Makes me wonder how to describe what I often paddle in. I'll probably just say very calm with 1 metre ripples. :D

From the pics the fish may not have been bountiful, but a nice day out anyway.

Nice gathering Mango's...well done to Daniel for joining the flotilla.
Squidder, that's a good gar. A bit odd only the one came aboard though :? :D Any suggestions on where to move for the Mango local? :?:

Kevin - Squidette decided to head for shore soon after the wind picked up, I probably should have joined her

Philip - your stripey fish sounds like it may have been a moonlighter (see pic below), did you catch it on the troll? If so, well done! Forum member Fisher has a moonlighter as his avatar.

Troppo - As Scott said, PPB has a reputation for whipping up a nasty short chop very quickly. I don't think the chop would have been much higher than 2 or 3 feet, but since I was anchored, and the waves were close together, the back of the yak dipped down the back of one, setting me up to cop the full face of the next larger wave.

Poddy - I'm sure the gar wasn't alone, but the weather forced us in before we had time to catch his mates. As for a new mango local......maybe somewhere closer to the city, Brighton or Hampton? :?:

Hmm. Could the unidentified fish be a grass whiting? They deveelop a bit more green in their colouring when they mature a bit

Jason - I think it was closer to the "old wife" - wish I'd taken a pic - recall it had longer rear dorsal and anal fins and not was so rounded across the back. Also its snout was only mildly elongated. It didn't make the grunting noise though (as described in amonline.net.au) when I was releasing it. What was freaky was the way it rolled its eyes back to look at me while I was trying to roll the hook out - the whites were a bright (but dirty) yellow - kinda like those demon masks in traditional japanese (and chinese) theatre

Reading a bit more on it, I'm glad I opted to release it in the water rarther than handle it - if I don't know what it is, I ain't touchin it...

took it on a SP jigged up and down almost directly below the yak in 7m
