Following the visit to Cressbrook Dam noticed the sounder was off song, borrowed Gunstons head unit and which showed the same fault as mine on the swing; a final test of heads on his yak proved my transducer was at fault.

Being the second occasion for a trannie problem, and aggravated by the transport strap being on the keel in the general area when on the van roof and possibly weakening the sealant bond, decided to add some support with some sort of clamping.

A couple of 3/16" x 50mm metal threads were threaded through from under the swing so externally there is a round head and flat washer and silicone, on the inside, another smear of silicone, flat washer, split washer and then a nut to tighten the bolts in place firmly as a unit. Because they are coming through from an angled keel, the end of the bolts are closer than at the point of entry.

Two pieces of a plastic lunch box were cut to wide strips and slots put in at each end to create a plastic saddle/bridge between the bolts, with the slots taking up the differences in bolt width.

The trannie was then stuck in a blob of silicone in the usual way and the saddle screwed down by hand with more flat washers and nuts.

Very confident it will work but won't water test for a day or two while the sealant cures

Gday Dodge,
Bit late but what if you cut a block of foam to fit tight between the deck and the hull and had a space cut out of it to hold the transducer, Would save the holes throught the yak the larger silicone spread should get a better hold

Cheers Dave

Geez, there's a few green frogs here fellas :p Richo, I wouldn't like to see that green yak of yours after a big night out - would make me even "greener"  Man that close up pic was almost too much
A bit off the thread I know, but I couldn't resist :D
If & when I get a FF / sounder, I reckon the rudder mount sounds like the go for my beautiful sandy coloured Hobie Outback (shark attracting device) for a trannie
I have an aversion to drilling holes in my yak - must be similar to my aversion to dentists :p

Cheers

Dave the holes underneath are of no concern to me as the previous boat had 4 skin fittings under the water, and the last instal of the trannie had a large buttress of silicone either side as well as that underneath.

Thinking I might just laminate a plywood pad moulded to the curve of the hull to spread the load of the strap while travelling which would be easy enough although I'm hoping this saddle idea will flex OK, also will ease the front strap ...only time will tell

Richo ., why on earth would you want fourskin fittings under the boat

I'm nervous about drilling holes in the deck let alone the hull  . I hope it works for you. I had similar concerns and eventually siliconed a piece of pool noodle jammed between the transducer and the deck - it seems rock solid now but have only used it a couple of times.

Would go the rudder option myself if I had one, and also reads the water temp which the inhull trannie can't do [just gives the temp inside, bugger].

Mark be daring, even a tiny hole in Barry would ease the suppressed tension within you at customising

By the way on your GC visit a couple of blokes meeting you for a gargle and the lift home to your place is arranged with Ben

would you want fourskin fittings under the boat
Bazza would you believe me if I said I did deliveries for the rabbi

I saw the picture of the bolts in the hull...then the horizon shifted...and it all went black. I regained consciousness, and I still see bolts in the hull...I'm getting over it now. Err, um... I suppose there is no reason why bolts should not be put through the underwater parts, or even fabricate a whole mounting plate with recess for sounder at skin level externally....but I don't think I could drill into my hull....

Good luck, and I hope the results are good, cheers Andybear

Just as you told me. looks good.

My only question is which way is the transducer facing?

Like the part where the bolt goes through on the transducer should be nearest the bow of the boat. So it would be mounted as if mounted on a boat in the normal way.

Sel I put it that way so I wasn't working around the bolt holder, with the signal being a cone from the bottom of the trannie it doesn't matter which way they go in, except upside down

I only highlighted this Richo as when I put mine in last week, the instructions in the manual said to place the transducer on the hull just as if it was bolted to the rear of a boat. Directional wise that is.

 I don't know for sure but your trandsucer mey be reading the bottom upside down back the front if you know what I mean

So if it is facing the right way you shouldn't have a problem, just thought I'd tell you. :D

cheers

Just did a water test of the radical cure, and dry inside as expected, and problems appear solved with signal quite clear but not conclusive as I was on a 2m deep man made estate lake in a howling gale and the zoom function was getting hysterical trying to keep up with the bobbing of the yak [so was I].

Crunch time is on the deep water of the dam Saturday where there is a lot of bottom variation to show

Swing took quite a hammering in the conditions on the dam Saturday, and came away dry as a bone inside, and sounder had a quality signal.

So good outcome

I met a manufacturer of these recently who said that dunking the transducer in silicone or similar is a great way to kill it. Not sure if that is true.
