I too, do not want to drill a hole in my pride and joy.

After a bit of homework I came up with the following removable Sounder install. To some it might look a bit rough, but it works for me.

Hi Other yakker,

I like what you have done with mounting the fish finder, but will you have troubles when you beach/launch her, and bury the transducer in sand/mud/gravel or worse still hit some rock?

If we could persuade the manufacturers to make one scupper hole much larger than the others, you could pull the transducer out, or leave it flush with the hull. I think shooting thru the hull will be a better proposition for you

Cheers Andybear

PS I dont think shortening the cables will be an issue for the performance of the fish finder. Electricity moves about the speed of light (or pretty bloody quick at least) the readout is based on the speed of sound through water, which is almost stationary by comparison. Other users on the forum have shortened their cables with no ill effect

PPS Make sure the angle of the transducer is perpendicular (shooting straight up and down) or you will not get the best reading

Could be right about the warranty excuse/reason/cop out, and I must point out that I am not a technician so am not really qualified to say what I said. However, I would have no qualms about shortening the cable if I had reason to do it. A cut and a join would probably change the resistance somewhat, but I dont think it would play a part in the computation of depth or any other thing that would reflect the signal.

It is pleasing to see that the transducer can be hauled out real quick

Cheers Andybear

PS Also noted that the manufacturers provide optional extention connections, which does not prove (but tends to indicate) that messing with the length or the lead may not be critical to its operation

I just coiled up my excess cable and zip-zapped it with a couple of cable ties. No mess, no fuss, and no hassles if I ever want to on-sell it later.
Why not coil the cable inside the tower that the head unit sits on?

Maybe egg-sucking time here, but I make a point of completely disconnecting all electrics after a trip - salty residue and batteries do nasty things to contacts and electronics.

Hello,

Just wondering if you could give me an update on how your scupper setup is holding, very intrested in applying a similar technique.

Cheers,
So far so good..

The only downside is that the footwell slowly fills with water. I originally thought that the high density foam was not 'hard' enough, but I think that it's softness gives it a buffer against knocks. I would like to find some rubber hard enough to fully seal the scupper hole when it is tightened up. (as per original plan). I am happy enough with the current set up not to be too worried about improving it at the moment.

Cheers,

Marty.
