HI I'm new to the sport, but have been a keen on my fishing for a long time. I have been looking at a choice between either the OK prowler 13 or the viking tempo.
I will be fishing around Broken Bay in Sydney paddling out of brisbane waters, so thier is a bar to cross (not the most dangerous bar around but anywhere throught the surf deserves its respect.) Just wondering which one of these yaks is a better boat for these fishing conditions.

Thanks all Dave

Thanks Occy,
Took a look at them, good to see some set up instead just on a shop floor. They look the goods
I Notice one of them had a rudder and one didn't did you happen to know how this affected thier steering.
The local shop was telling me not to use the rudder in surf as they tend to bend if you broach

Welcome to the forum Dave

I have a Swing which is similar in size to the P13 and although I'm happy without a rudder can see occasions when it may help.

In the surf I cannot see why you couldn't retract it [as occy's pic] when in the surf zone to relieve wave pressure, and drop it in the water when clear of the wave action

The prowler is much more responsive to the paddle than the tempo. This is important for bar crossing as you will want to sit then paddle hard to get out and pace yourself to the waves on the way in. I think the prowler is much more suited to this kind of work.

I have the prowler13 with rudder and havnt heard about this retracting it in the surf, almost all my yaking is done outside and I have it down at all times and have had no problems in countless launches and returns. The only thing I would say is that when returning it offers almost no stearing benefits as the rear is usually siting up on the wave.
With regards to the yak itself I would reccomend it to anyone. Ive had mine for over a year now and reckon I cant pick a fault. They are a great all rounder, its great in the surf, very stable and yet resonably quick, Ive used it for touring as well and can comfortably sit in it all day and storage is never a problem.
Hmmm I reckon OK owe me a few bucks for that rave.
