I've done a heap of diving at the bottom end of PPB and being new to the Kayak diving/fishing experience, I'd like to know where others dive from their kayaks?
Cheers

Gday Mick,
I've only targetted scallops off Rye (to the left of the pier), and Dromana (no scallops but a heap of dirty northern pacific sea stars)

I reckon there'd be quite a few nice scenic dives off the yak down that way, particularly off Portsea. I think Portsea hole (to the left of Portsea pier about 1km out) would be very accesible to yak divers, and is a great dive with lots of fish to see. You'd probably want a non-diver up top to keep an eye on gear etc as that area of the bay sees a fait bit of boat traffic. We always try to have a someone keeping an eye on the yaks, and pay them with scallops

G'Day Squidder
I've thought of Portsea hole but have been also been concerned with the traffic and the tides. I like the idea of the scallop dive though. If your ever on the western side of the bay give lonsdale bay a try, about 300-500 metres offshore, there's scattered little reefs where you might pick up the odd cray!

Nice tip Mick, cheers!
I'm headed to Canberra in a week so will have to keep that one up my sleeve for a visit home
The scallop diving off Rye is easy and productive, with Nov-Jan usually the time when the scallops are in best condition for the table. To the left of Rye Pier there is a yellow marker buoy about 1-ish km offshore, anywhere around this is good scallop ground but can be a bit prone to silting if there's been any rain (shouldn't be a problem  )

What depth are these scallops be found at Jason? Do you also have any idea at what depth one would generally find them? I dive (although haven't for 7 years - children :? ) but don't have any of my own kit. I am wondering if it would be possible to free dive for them like crays. I am sure you can tell by the nature of my question that I know nothing at all about scallops except that they are awesome baked with garlic and coriander.

Any insight appreciated.

JT, most of the scallops we get are from 6-12m depth, I think you could pick them up shallower, but they are certainly more plentiful in a bit deeper water. The problem with freediving is that even at say 4m deep I reckon you'd be hard pressed to spot them from the surface. So it would mean that all your searching would need to be done underwater while holding your breath - certainly possible, but pretty hard work in my books. I'd try and get them on SCUBA if I were you - when you find a patch you can usually get your bag of 100 in 20 or so minutes

There is a guy that free dives out of Rye and picks up scallops in the bay at about 8M, and dives for crays on the ocean side. He also spears the big squid when they come in to spawn at the end of winter.

I'd love to free dive, but frank it scares the sh*t out of me. I can't hold my breath that well.

Squidder is spot on. I've collected them from 6 - 15M. The ideal depth seems to be between 8 and 13ish. The bigger ones tend to be in deeper water in my experience. If you dive down and you see them, you'll get heaps. If you dive down and can't see any, you'll struggle.

I've seen them collected straight out of Anthony's nose boat ramp (Dromana Power Boat Ramp) all the way down to Blairgowrie.

Tides aren't really a problem around there, but the boat traffic is.

If you are diving anywhere near the heads, you would have to time your paddle to coincide with slack water, otherwise you would be on a drift dive.

You'd have to be a pretty good shot to spear squid, I've seen them UW and they move pretty fast when spooked.
I used to dive with a mate that had 2 UW scooters, one time we went straight out off the beach at Rye until we hit about 12 mts and filled our bags with scallops. We motored back to the beach UW the whole time using an opposite compass bearing. We had to stay UW because we could hear boats moving about and at 5 mts depth had one pass right over us, we didn't tow a dive flag as we were not sure how it would have worked with the scooters and varying depths. We used his scooters mainly in the UW caves in SA & WA until he sold them, they're good fun!

i musta missed these postings...sounds like awesome fun.

Abercornmick, i'd be prepared to sit-watch/up-top for you if you needed a spotter, mind you organising a time to suite would be a bugger as i work sunday-friday and i need reasonably calmish conditions 5-15 knots max....but i'd be happy to do a little fishing whilst you dive about down below.Hoping to try something like this myself sometime and could be a good way to get started for me.

That goes for you also Jase... If i can be of assistance during a dive for ya give us a yell.

And i would be prepared to call in a sickie if need be fellas 8)
