Beauty of a morning, calm flat waters and comfortably warm for so early in the day.
Headed out from Chelsea Ycht club out to a mark Jason aka Squidder put me onto the other week  , and got pumped by flatties from word go. i had a bait rod and a SP's rod and both were constantly getting ripped. i didnt even have a chance to work the plastics, just cast them out and put in rodholder while i pulled in a flattie on the bait and by the time i had the fish in the boat the SP's rod was kicking over and that was how the morning went. NON STOP. Literally from 1 rod straight onto the other and back again with 85% hook-ups. IT WAS BLOODY great fun.
Caught 20 - 30 flatties kept 16, all were small but for 1 that measured 44cm :D
Also tried trawling for about 30 minutes closer to the beach with sx40 but no action.
great spot Jason, and the flaty fillets for baits worked really well, saved soooooo much time not rebaiting. Mind you the way the SP's were taking fish ( without working the SP) was bloody amazing and i dont wonder if i'll never use bait again.

What a fantastic way to start the working week. 8)

Great work Tony :D You can't argue you constantly bent rods and a feed of flatty. How deep were you roughly?

i'll let you know how my filleting tech' is going tommorrow Jason, i told the boss i would be in at 9.30 but i didnt get off the water till near 10am so i couldnt clean me catch( got to work at 10.25am  ).BUT they are on ice, and you know how well my esky keeps things chilled hey mate.
G'day Mushi, not sure how deep the mark was, you might have to hit Jason up for that, but at 1 stage when i thought i was starting to drift AWAY from the shoreline i tossed out my anchor but ran outta rope, and im fair sure ive got at least 10 mts of rope on that.

By the way, how did you guys go over the weekend? i didnt see any trip reports, or was it just not worth mentioning

I hope the filleting goes alright - I've generally found that the 'boneless' method works a lot better when the fish are fresh ie/ not chilled down. A lot of the time when trying to use that method on cold fish the bones come away with the flesh, rather than sticking to the skin. I'd be interested to know how you get on though

Tony, if the bones don't come out when you pull off the skin you can feel for them with your fingers and cut them out of the fillet with a knife - you still end up with boneless fillets but it just takes a little bit longer

cheers all ..

Jas' you were spot-on about the filleting tech',it must have to be done fresh cos there was no way i could get that skin of with the bones attatched.massacred a few fillets trying and ended up just cutting it out. Dosent really take that much longer when you think about it. didnt get a chance to cookem last nite either but tonight - Giddy Up

sorry you lost me on that "Latex' comment HobieVic

Poddy .. lol .. i was bleeding from about 6 puncture wounds while i was out there on the water ( very conscious about blood water and sharks ) but when i got home and had a shower i found the other 4 that had been giving me subtle grief all day.little bastards. VERY effective defense for them though.

Yeah, I thought it would be harder with cold fish. For a lot of reasons it's better to clean em on the water (filleting works better, you can toss the carcasses overboard rather than in the garbage) - but it is a bit tricky to do em in the yak, and it's often the last thing you want to do after a long session (particularly if you're racing to get back to work!)

well i think thats it Jason, its a simple matter of sacraficing 20-30 miutes fishing time on the water to get in a little earlier and clean the fish before you go. Mind you thats only because i had to shoot of to work.Had it been a regular day off then times not a factor.

Latex/SP's, ohhh yeah i get it. Thats pretty bloody funny

Well done Tony good to see your getting amongst some fish, flatty filltes go down well any time especially if there fresh.
