As the sun rose over the alluring waters of Portsea, Poddy, Milt, Mushi and myself unloaded our rods and kit, fitted out the yaks and prepared for the promise of abundant fish. As we slid our yaks into the water it sure looked like it was going to be a picture perfect paddling day and we turned out to be right. Unfortunately, it wasn't really a picture perfect fishing day. A few factors probably went against us, not least of which being the dolphins and seals that were hanging around the general area. There were light winds blowing from the southeast and for the most part the water was calm... too calm. My trolled SPs got more bites from birds than they did fish.

After a well-earned sleep in, Squidder joined us a few hours later closer to high tide and our luck didn't improve as the day went on. With only a single exception at the hands of Mushi, we weren't even able to intice any squid. I did manage 2 table-sized salmon (32 + 34 cm) but had to go to some 'extreme' lengths to get them. And if memory serves correctly, thats all that was caught all day (we fished till almost midday) and was definitely the slowest I've even seen the area fish. Oh well... when it comes to fishing, it's days like this that make the good days great.

That's not to say that it wasn't a great day out, however. It's always a buzz when the dolphins show up and it's always fun to get out on the water in such good weather, even if we did prefer the wind to be coming from the other direction.

T'was great to meet the guys in person and put faces to the names. It's always good to get out with like-minded fishos and I'm already looking forward to the next outing. I should add that it was a relief that Mushi didn't turn out to be anything like his avatar would suggest either. :)

Nice one 5th... just remember. A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work! (Unless you happen to be a professional fisherman)

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. Yes it was good day weather and paddling wise, the old shoulders and back are really feeling it this morning as there were many kilometres paddled yesterday.

Good to catch up with the mangoes once again for a good solid paddle and a few more great laughs to boot :p

The fishing wasn't the best, but sucking it all that fresh air felt great in a picturesque location. Good to finally put a face to the name Josh and yes I think on offshore paddle behind the breakers one winter at Inverloch or Torquay will be on the cards soon.

Yes, thanks for showing us the ropes at Portsea Josh, I'm sure on its day it's a very fishy spot

After the paddling was done the assembled mangoes enjoyed a hamburger lunch on the foreshore. The highlight occurred when Poddy was telling us a story about the "good ol' days", a local wattle bird decided his story was crap, and flew in to perch on his head for a few seconds

Hahahaha lets not forget the sleep walking hand stars

When a bird shits on your head its good luck! When a bird lands and rests on your head and listens to a bit dribble what does this mean

Poddy the salmon curse will be over this weekend it has to be!!!

Very much appreciated ya showing us about Josh, and even if the fish didn't largely respect our bumbling skills any day ya come across a dolphin pod and seal at large is a beaut. The big oil rig thingo also passed us for a bit of interest, and I learnt it's very hard to be making a point about this very serious yakfishing business with a bird on ya head....ya opinions just aren't respected by fellow paddlers. The good thing about the internet is no-one can see where a Cape Barren Goose is nesting at the moment.........  :D

Thanks for the trip Josh and boys, was a great morning to be on the water. Between Poddy not be able to troll up anythin and Squidder going squidless, the rest of us were going to struggle! I did manage one aero squid on a silver whiting baited jig early on, but that was all for me!

In the field for the next 2weeks straight with work! Over towards Warnambool, some sites on the Hopkins and Merri Rivers...wish i could bring the yak!
