So I'm thinking a new PFD would be a great Christmas present to receive but being a personal preference I need to put explicit details on my Christmas list :)

So, my question is, what do you think is the _best_ PFD for kayaking? Pictures, links, etc. would make the selection even better :)

I'm thinking an inflatable one isn't necessarily the best choice cause I do plan on going in the drink from time to time and don't want to have to inflate/deflate each time. I also think something that doubles as a utility vest in someway would be handy, but that depends on the overall suitability.

Looking forward to the responses.

Cheers,

Gavin

G'day Gavin
I heard that inflatable pfds will have to be tested each year by the manufacturer. Approx. $30.00 for the manual type. It was on the fishing show on 4BC on Saturday.

Hiya Gavin, I use this fella.

http://www.canoeingdownunder.com.au/ima ... ProdID=355

Suits me as it's got 5 pockets (one being a large bladder type on the back)...so Epirbs, Handheld Etrex, pliers etc are catered for space wise. I also like the "waistcoat" style of PFD's for a little extra winter warmth. Points against are it wasn't the cheapest buy (the shop I bought from were discontinuing them and knocked 80 bucks off...but it still cost me $200 - but no mention of that at home here please mate). And why it isn't yellow is beyond me. It's colour means it only gets classified as a PFD Type 3, not Type 2. This is OK for Vic reg's but ya may want to check out other states reg's. :D :D

Treck or Tempo PFD's are the way to go.

Hi I was lucky enough to score a new PFD for christmas, my wife went down to Anaconda and got me an MTI Riptide (negotiated a good price as distasteful as saving money is  ) and without getting on the water I am very impressed the fit and design gives me a much greater range of motion (with less effort). There are 4 pockets 3 zippper and 1 flap it is made from cordura so should be tough and the foam inserts are shaped, there are two spots to clip my extra knife on and fit adjustments galore. Here is a link http://www.mtiadventurewear.com/product ... iptide.php
The PFD compares well with others that were significantly more expensive. They are worth a look and I havent seen the macpac PFD (no doubt it will be superb all there gear is) but there equipment commands such high prices that I dont think will be able to buy it while I want to remain married.

Sounds like my wife got a bargain she got it for a bit less than that. It certainly looks and feels better than my old one (stearns). Although the old one kept me afloat when it had to.
