hit the usual spot again after some early chores....

wind was up....about 15 knots, but was desperate for a paddle after 2 weeks

Hit Empire and Canada Bay, launching at 1.30 with the falling tide...
Flatheads galore....smallish, around 35 cm. I decided to change my deep diving chubby after the 6 flattie and trolled 2 sx-40's...my champion red and black and a virgin green and white. I immediately had a strike on the new lure, a small bream around 25cm.

Wind was a pain but got a bit of a workout and enjoyed 2 and a half hrs on the water.

Final result: 14 flathead (largest 42 cm) 3 whiting and 8 bream (20 to 31 cm).

All the bream were caught on this lure.... go figure..

here are the best 2

Nice effort Steve. I had one that colour, sacrificed to a lizard somewhere. Given that pearl/watermelon is my favourite bass minniw for bream in the parra I can see why it worked.

Steve, do you troll all the time or find a good spot and have a few casts ?,and do you use a downrigger or just troll the sx40s around slowly?, how do you decide when they are at the right depth? and how far back from the kayak do you troll them , ? sorry about all the questions mate , but i am new to trolling and dont seem to know what i am doing , your help would be appreciated, thanks Steve :? :? :?

OK guys...

I'm only a beginner but let me share my x-spots and techniques that seem to work for me.... :D

First off, falling tide is the best.....
the spots that produce the bigger ones seem to be waiting around small drop offs... when I say small.....I mean a difference of maybe 50 cm as the area is pretty shallow all round.

Depending on wind, I'll sit around an area and flick into the shallow (maybe 1 ft of water) and slowly work the SX 40 back to the yak. Too fast and the lure tends to drag more, pick up more weed and bring in the (undesired at this time) flatties...
Little twitches to start the lure and get it to the bottom....then very slowly with a couple of pauses in the middle 3 to 5 seconds each...

If there is more wind....then I'll troll from shallows towards drop offs...

here are the best spots in the area....(not a big secret as you'll often see tournament boats there)

here are a few piccies:

Barry...

when I troll i like to have the SX-40s at least 15 mts behind me....
I reckon the yak and paddling spooks the fish a bit in such low water (3ft).
When casting, I find the strike comes close in to the yak. I've seen them follow the lure past their nose, turn and follow it to the yak. When you pause, they seem to swim past the lure and look at it from the front again. They let it pass and quickly strike....
(too much time on the water :?)

hope it helps...will organize a trip with Kraley soon...

catch you on the water

Steve
