Aren't RDO's great, a day off work once a month so I can go fishing. My luck in the past hasn't been good, it always seems to rain on my RDO's. I love the rain, but can't it be on one other day instead. I usually try to get to the coast on my RDO's to have a go at the bream and flathead population. But again it rained, no coast trip again. I haven't put a finger on a keyboard to do a trip report in a little while so I thought I should contribute something. I have had a fair bit of success with bass lately being so close to the dam, so I didn't want to waste a day doing nothing. I put the yak on the ute for a early morning assault on the bass at Cressbrook Dam.

Waking up nice and early and hearing rain drops didn't make a great start to the morning. :( Bugger !!! Did a few jobs and waited for the rain to hopefully clear. Still very overcast and raining very softly, I thought stuff this, I'm going. I grabbed a quick bite to eat and threw the rest of the gear in the ute and headed of to the dam. It's great when you have the whole dam to yourself, not a person in sight. Unloaded the yak and gear and got ready for a trolling session. Two rods, one was loaded with a Jackall and the other with a Halco/RMG poltergeist deep diving lure with 10lb Nitlon flurocarbon leaders. Jumped in and set of, only got 80 meters from the boat ramp and the jackall got smashed. Grabbed the rod and slowly fought the fish to side of the yak. I lifted it on board and onto my lap and wrapped it in a wet chamois to quieten it down for measuring. It measured in at 34cm, equall to my PB bass :D . That was a good start, reorganised the yak and had another go in the same area, only paddled another 30 meters and another hit on the jackall but with much more force. This was a better fish, he really put some effort in trying to escape. He managed to circle the other line and not wanting to make a mess, kept pressure on him to keep him under control. After untangling the lines, I finished fighting the fish and brought him to the side of the yak and lifted him onto my lap. Wrapped him up and measured him, my new PB 36cm. :D (have to change my PB list now) I was thrilled. I thought he would have measured better after his fighting ability. For such a small fish they fight extremely well. He managed to pull my kayak in a little circle which is when the lines got tangled.

I love eating fresh fish but I am not game to eat bass so I let him swim away to grow bigger for next time. I paddled for another 2 hours but only getting some touches but also one other close hookup. I noticed on my sounder that the bass were all in the deep parts of the dam all hiding in the weeds, most visits to this dam they seem to cover more of the water from top to bottom. I had a great afternoon fishing for bass despite the overcast conditions, finishing with a pair. It certainly was better than sitting in an office looking at computer screens all day.

My only frustration now is to overcome my stupid camera, it's the outdated roll film type. I can't take close up pictures with it, I try at arms length but still no good. That's what I should buy with my tax refund cheque, a new digital camera. But then, I will have to update my old dinosaur computer to match the camera so I can download my photos. Who said kayakfishing was cheap. :?

Hopefully land a nice big Wivenhoe bass on Sunday, but that will be another story.

Good one John worthwhile getting wet with results like that, hope Sunday is as good.

Unfortunately won't make big W this weekend as sorted the sounder warranty claim today worked out better than expected, the Cuda 128 is being upgraded to a 168 with only a little extra for me to pay.
Prefer that to a revamped 128 so will spend the w/e reinstalling the new unit, mainly just silicone the transducer in place
