Well, work sees me currently on the Sunshine Coast and I had a spare few hours today so of course I decided to find the local boat hire shop at Noosa and rent myself a yak for a few hours.

I'd come prepared with a rod, reel and a small selection of lures, jigheads and sp's which I put into a bumbag. A bottle of water, some food and I was off to check out the area.

The wind was up but the Noosa river has quite a few protected spots. I also found out that the outgoing tide will sweep you out the heads if you're not careful...the tide was ripping out through the channel very quickly and at one stage I was swept a couple of hundred metres when I was looking down unhooking a fish. Need to be more careful in fast water!.

Anyway trolled around with the rod stuck in a front scupper and caught a couple of flatties around 25cm. PAddled into a more sheltered spot amongst the mega million dollar mansions where I flicked soft plastics under pontoons for a few small bream and one that busted me up big time!

I had 3 hours on the water and enjoyed the afternoon. Would love to have more time to find a few more 'quiet' spots as the stretch of water I was on was very busy, even on a Tuesday arvo.

Nice work Dave - the third pic is where I caught my very first yak caught fish and my very first SP caught fish. A small trevor from under one of the jetties. RE: being swept along a couple of hundred metres - did that happen where the channel shoots right from where you are in the third pic? That current and channel is where I managed to snag my anchor and capsize spectacularly with [email protected] going everywhere on my first trip

Good work getting a trip in, shame you couldn't have got outside for some offshore action.

Good on you for getting yourself organised and out Dave.

I went to the Goldcoast for business about a year ago which coincided with the Melbourne cup. "Come and get pissed with me and perv at hot liquored up chicks at the local racing club" said my customer. Having spent the whole previous day with him and convinced that he wasn't a spender I said nope. 7 text messages later from him I turned off the phone. Went and bought some prawns and oysters and a 6 pack, took my light rod that I had packed in the suitcase and some lures and went fishing off the rocks. The sun was out and the sea air was fresh and it was a great afternoon. Sure beats working.

Where did you rent the yak from?

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. Clever man, DaveyG. When I saw the topic with your name and Noosa location, I was puzzled. So, you were only visiting, but you certainly didn't waste time. When I read about the current, I recalled Scotty Beefs adventure in that area.

Scotty: the pics would have brought back a few memories for ya.

Yes, I agree the Noosa river is a pretty good spot with a variety of options. Yes ScottyB the spot you mention is correct, the tide really rips through there. I noted a few submerged logs and thought that may have been 'your' spot!

Red, the yak was surprsingly good for a cheapo rental. It sliced through the water pretty well, although the lack of a seat/backrest certainly got the stomach muscles working! I rented it from the first boat shed along gympie terrace at noosaville.

Cheers. Dave (still on Sunshine Coast but about to hop a plane back to Sydney)
