The hunt for a decent king off the yak continues..
this weekend when to a spot where the kingies had been eariler in the week (friend had caught several off a sink boat to around 27lb).
Trolled a williamson blue water livie around for around 10km's, flicked poppers at all structure and poles but nothing.
Then realised why no luck - saw a kawahi work up (Aussie salmon) in the distance - all the kings would be there. paddled over and the size of it just got bigger and bigger. When I got there the first work up would have been 50m in diametre and showed 15-20m thick on the sounder!!!! at this stage there were 2 or 3 other work ups around this of similar size. At one stage 2 or 3 joined together to form the biggest work on kahawai I've seen. Must have been a couple fo hundred birds work it while I was in the middle of it. Great fun just being in the middle.
Every couple of minutes the kY would scatter beening chased. I through everthing including the kitchen sink at them trying to get a king, jigs, blue water livie, berley SP's. Caught a few ky as by catch - was thinking of putting one out as a livie but there were that many ky around would have been pointless.
Stopped for a rest at a remote beach and watched the work up contiune, my mate followed one section of it in a snapper hunt and come back in an hour with 6 odd fish averaging 4kgs with largest around 4.7kg - his remarks were somthing around barrel, shooting and fish. Decided to stick it out on the kingies hunt but came back with an empty well.
next week more of them should have turned up. Am thinking of making some "tuna tubes" for a couple of kawahai as livies.
regards
