My Hobie Mirage Outfitter (Tandem) :

Just thought id start my thread and introduce you to 'Billy', my 2 seater Mirage powered Hobie complete with aditional fishing package.
even though we have a small car the Kayak transports well and after the hardbody Thule system was fitted i started to relax during transportation.
My relationship with my Partner, Claire, was at a crossroads... we needed to spend more time together, and i haggled a bargain :)

I plan on adding a Sounder eventually, depending in my confidence at the time in marine grade silicon ( at the moment? Fishtank still holding ) will decide if its an external add on, i sure as hell have alot of hatch space to play around with a system or two.

The dual system is a dream, i havent taken it out with the speedo in but it really lifted over small distances, turning the front Mirage drive around works well as a reverse system, managed to hold ground amongst snags in wind fairly well.

Ive noticed lots of people have great modifications on the kayaks ( Hobies too! ) and look forward to any tips towards my goals which are :

(A) Sounder (Transducer etc etc, hidden cable system)

(B) Modified clip cords ( hanging vurley buckets, bogas etc etc )

Love to hear your ideas/comments,

Paffoh

That is one sweet set up!!! Very nice. I was a bit shy about the mods I was thinking about, but upon getting them done I have had no problems and the transducer etc work perfectly. Go for it chief! 8)

One Question, how did you mount the extra rod holder?
It was part of the additional cost required to purchase the fishing package that went with it, i was lucky to have found this scotty system pre-mounted ( silicon gasket ), this particular yak was on display @ the dealer and has had since purchase only 2 hours water time :)

Thanks for that close up mate, I am a bit hesitant about drilling into my Outback, but am slowly warming to the idea

Very nice rig. Must be Hobie fever time as I too just bought a Sport last week.

Tell me did the rod holder in front of the front seat come standard (molded in the kayak) or did you install it? The sport doesn't have any molded rod holders in the front.

Yes I see that now, I check Hobies website and the Outback also has the 2 extras up front too. I bought a flushmount one today to install on the Sport but I'd have to cut a small piece off the top edge as I think it will stick out over the inside of the deck. I'm now thinking I might get another removable one like the one that came with it.

I just then have to figure where to put the sounder.

Hi guys i had an idea for fitting scotty rod holders to my hobie outfitter they work a charm and it keeps everything neat!

First i machined the bracket part off the base so all i was left with only the middle workings of the base.

As nothing sticks that well to the Yak (polyethylthene) i had a plastic sleeve made up (the same diameter as the hobie rod holders) to slip the machined base into of which in glued together with 680 loctite. I then inserted the sleeve into the hobie mould after layering with sifaflex (sp) and finally drilled through the hobie mould/sleeve from the inside with a pilot drill bit and screwed a stainless steel screw to prevent the holder from rotating.

I posts some pics soon but i am rapt with the outcome, when i plug my rod holder in i now have a fully rotatable base that i can adjust for any height and it just unplugged when im finished with no snags to contend with!

Hi Eric,

As far as I know the Sport should come with a flushmount up forward, with 2 moulded holders to the rear.

Your dealer should install it when you pick it up. That was the case when I purchased mine, and I have a Hobie brochure which actually shows a Sport with a flushmount fitted.

I personally love forward fitted rod holders, and hate looking back over my shoulder when trolling. I plan to buy and install another flushmount up front, and will only use the 2 rear holders as a means of transporting.

As far as sounder install goes, I mounted my Humminbird on a ram based system in the port side gunnel, and it is easily fitted/removed as necessary. I get my camera back from repairs today so will try to post pics later.
