Hi all,

Well i'm looking for my first yak and really don't know where to start.

I'll be mainly using it for estuary lure fishing and venturing out to port phillip bay trolling, drifting and flicking plastics at anything that swims past. Also will use bait from time to time.

Depending on the species will determine if i'll keep them or C&R. After all a feed of flatties and whiting i can't turn down.

If it helps i'm 186cm and 83kg.

Thanks

IceMan

G'day Iceman. Welcome aboard mate.

The perception Swings and Viking Espri, are very popular down your way.
the locally mate Wavedance kingfisher is looking promising too.

I am sure the Melbourne Mob will soon join in here. :D

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Budget.........Around $1500 fully kitted up

Hopefully including some sort of basic fishfinder setup.
Hi Iceman, I got my Escapade Q-kayak all set up for around $1500 (give or take).........worth a look, particulary if your into yakking/camping as it allows for some big dry bag storage as well as hull storage.....pretty stable too.......www.q-kayak.nz.co worth a look in......although I am pretty sure I am the only one here with this yak.

G Day Ice, I'd probably suggest coming along to a Melb bash and looking a few yaks over...having a paddle...and picking the collective brains over. It may help ya decision, and come up with idea/questions etc ya may not have thought of. Check out Fishing Trips, ya more than welcome to join in and the tribe ashore after we're finished. $1500 can get ya a good set up...but also knocks out some possibilities  :D

Iceman, a good function to try and attend is the Melbourne Mangoes Christmas BBQ this weekend - keep an eye in the Trip Reports section for the location. There will be probably be 6 or more different models of kitted out fishing yaks you could have a paddle/pedal of.

Nothing like looking at other folks yaks and setup to help ya with the BIG decision. Don't rush. Certainly take up the offer of knocking around with the local AKFFers.

Welcome aboard IcemanDude :!:

I would suggest you go around some of the paddling shops and see if they have a tryout session and try an many kayaks as you can. that interest you. After this you will start to get an idea on what suits you and your budget. This is also a good way of getting a better deal and with all the info on this site.

This is what I did, I picked serveral models before hand and tried some of them from different shops, and talking to the shop owner from one shop on my other choices (which the shop did not stock) I ended up getting a very good discount for my P13, paddle & pfd - this was the kayak I liked best but the owner didn't know that at the time  . Every time I go back to the shop I get a discount on anything I buy.

I hope this helps

Victor
