Hi all.
Looking at either a Minn Kota or 2hp petrol outboard for the FnD. Cobra make a side mount designed for the FnD to accomodate one.
Has anyone had experience with powering their kayaks?
Will a side mount cause tracking problems?
The motor will be used on long distance trips to reach my favourite fishing location quickly and then paddle power used from then on.

John

I see many powered yaks and canoes on my local Hinze Dam [although electric] and they have no tracking problems at all even though side mounted as the long hull is in effect a rudder once pointed in the right direction.

As you say they cover the distance easily

If looking at petrols consider the Seagull a pommie motor, super light and reliable

Don't be too tough on knot-too-fast for want to put a motor on his FnD guys. Have you seen the size of those things?

Approx 3.8m long by 91cm wide! I can't blame him for wanting a motor!

It's actually a friend of mine who wants to mount the outboard to his kayak.

Hi there Knot too fast,

Electric motors are great for distances but weigh the yak down by an extra 20kg. I have one and use it about one in every five trips. Forget Petrol, we need oil to build yaks, not power them.

Also, don't just think Minn Kota, check out some of the other, cheaper electric trolling motor options because they all fulfil the same purpose and basically they use the same design.

For info on leccies have a look through the DIY posts.

Hi Dan,
I checked out the Jarvis Walker leccy, (made in China) 34lb thrust but the Minn Kota 30lb thrust was the same price anyway.(Just under $300.00)
What unit do you have? Is a deep cycle battery the only way to go?

Hi John,

I got the Kmart one - Can't even remember what it's called or how big it is. Have a look at previous posts. It cost about $240.

Battery is important. I reckon all leccie users would agree, closed cell gel is the way to go. I use a 32 [email protected] hour and it does the job just fine for 3-4 hours on the water at various speeds. (about $200)

The other day the Scupper Pro towed Guy and his Viking thru a 25 knot North Easterly at 4.8 km/h in Clarrie Hall Dam - All up 2 x blokes, 2 yaks and gear would easily have hit 200kg and the motor didn't skip a beat.

Gee Les, that's getting up there at 10 MPH.
I could give some of those real stinkboaters a run for their money.

a motor on a FnD - mmmm sacreligeous  - where abouts on the South coast are you knot-man
Hi Polar,
I'm 15 minutes inland from Merimbula and Bega.
I like to think outside the square when it comes to boating and fishing and I reckon a 2.5 hp should get me up around 16 km per hour and allow me to reach fishing destinations way up some of the river systems around here. I also have taken a keen interest in Twofold Bay in Eden, which is one of the deepest natural harbours in the world and the motor will give me more confidence in navigating long distances.
The paddling will always come into play for trolling and when I need a good workout.
Once fitted I will experiment on pulling a small tube with one of the kids on board. I'll try anything once. :D
Outriggers and a sail could also be a goer on the FnD. After all it is a beast of a thing.

Hey guys
I can get my yak up on the plane with my paddle!
Does that mean I have to get my yak registered?? Seriously, I can get it to plane and it really does move.
