Texts were exchanged about 4:30am between team squid and Mushi, along the lines of 'I'm running late!' - bizarrely we both pulled up in the car park at the same time, around 5am......an early start, but too late in the day as it turned out :x

We launched and paddled around the triangular reef which Hobievic described, I caught a 20cm pinky on sp, aside from that it was only flathead which were on the chew early. We drifted round and worked SP and bait, Squidette caught a good bag of flathead on SP, while Mushi caught and released a big snook (that's gotta help the Sunday mangoes point score). Then he performed some flawless 'switch baiting' for squid - by reeling in a ripper sized squid which had attached itself to his silver whiting snapper bait, then replacing the whiting with an artificial jig and hooking up  . The squid were biting for a while, Dave was on inky fire with a great bag, Squidette got a couple as well. I caught a few flathead on trolled HBs, and a solitary squid. We pulled the pin early and were off the water by 9:30, while Dave decided to push on. Last we saw of him he was headed for the horizon muttering something about berley and big snapper.

Thanks for a fun trip Dave, hopefully next time we can make the most of our early start

Thanks for the report Jason, and to you and Michelle for the trip out, good to catch up.

Like Jason said, i think we were that bit too late (sun was starting to show) to get into some good pinkies/reds. That coupled with very still and very clear water didn't help us at all. Great to be able to look down 8m and clearly see everything on the reef.

Found a decent squid early as mentioned, switching the silver whiting that it wanted so badly for the shrimphunter jig. After drifting around some more on the reef, had a paddle and troll. Got to a drift point and started to quickly rip in the trolled little gold + black Berkley Frenzy 'Rattl'r' HB so i could swap if for a plastic and start my drift. Instead it got slammed on the way home :D A couple of short bursts then some nicer short but spirited runs. In the crystal clear water i could see the fish and my lure over the reef. The long shape I tought it was possibly a decent couta. Finally at the yak, it was a fat looking snook. I few pics and I decided to let the big girl go to terrorise some more baitfish and gars.

Got some good squid drifts happening. You could see them clearly. Got 3 more medium sized ones. Got them on a cheap shrimp hunter copy size 2.5-3 in a orange-white-purple colour.

It was snapper I had come for so I decided with not much happening on the reef I thought i might as well get out to the deeper water, anchor, berley and slap out some fresh squid. Got out to 14-15m. Unlimited small flatties, after 6 or 7 I gave up trying to get a legal one. Saw a small pod of dolphins cruise past about 200m away which was cool. The big squid head however didn't get a touch. On the way back in I decided to troll the squid with a sinker above it to get it around midwater. Had a steel trace on just incase the 'man in the grey suit' that Poddy recently met was cruising around the area  No luck there though. Decided to call it a day.

When packing up met a couple of guys about to get out there on SIK yaks. Had a chat to one of the guys who was taking a couple of rods out, and told him about the website. He told me he had previously picked up a few nice flatties to the left of the beach, out from the point, in the a few metres of water. Might be an option at the end of a morning session.

All in all it looks like a place with a heap of potential, especially with a more overcast day and a bit of chop to let the early morning bite last a bit longer. Big thanks to Scott (Hobie Vic) for passing on a heap of info before heading out!

Just for that little Poddy-operated and rigged informal total length comp.... the biggest squid was 43cm top of hood to tip of longest tentacle, along with almost 3 FEET of snook at 80cm (like the horse snook you caught there too Poddy) :D

Top effort Mushi and the Squids. Dave that snook pic is a beaut..as is the squid given ya the evil eye. Death by snook to the Sat tribe!! It's a great backyard HobieVic has there isn't it...it may be worth exploring with a whiting rig, berely and anchor...did anyone give it a lash? Well done on the Hb squid Squidder (there goes that stutter again), and on the flatties Michelle. Daylight saving starts soon, so morning Mornington runs maybe a bit easier to deal with I guess. Next year, there's the new freeway :D :D

Hi Guys

I went out yesterday and found it too clear and nice for pinkies too. You have to get there over the reef before first light. Bring on daylight saving and give us that extra hour in bed.

Great Squid Mushi. The big ones prefer baited jigs and even liveys.

Cheers

Scott

Yeah it does a bit for sure. Didn't quite have that deeper cuttle body though, and definitely no cuttle bone inside. One thing inside that was interesting was a few had been eating small crabs. I reckon a little gulp crab could even score a squid :!:
