Hey guys

I'm looking at using my yak to fish a few bream comps soon and would like some help on a livewell. I was thinking of an esky with an airator. Im not sure of the size of the esky i would need to keep 6 bream alive.
If anyone can help me out here it would be great.

Cheers

Which comp has a 6 fish bag and will let you enter? Most of the comps have boat restrictions that exclude yaks (25hp min and rising).

For 6 fish you are going to need something in the order of 60 litres - the comp will have rules for this as well anyhow so check that. I used to enter the local Ausbream socials, with an esky that holds around 30l. An aerator is good, but I just used to bucket in water every half hour or so. The bream (max 2) would keep very well.

The bream comps I used to fish had a 60 litre minimum and a submersible bilge pump with a diffuser type water spray. A standard aerator will not change the water only re-oxygenate it so the toxins from the bream's faeces ect will end up making them susceptible to external fungal diseases after release. I don't know how the rules have changed as I haven't fished a bream comp for over 5 years

In that case there are no restrictions - just need a system that won't harm the fish. By far the simplest is an esky and a bucket. This has the advantage of providing a change of water to remove the toxins of which Scott wrote. Simply bucket in extra water - I used to bucket in about 30l each time with a 10l bucket - and the water overflows into the well and out the scuppers. Note that I would do this on a tandem that I was operating solo so I had heaps of room for esky and bucket. It will be much more cramped with two on board.

The esky is better than any other crate, especially up your way, as you want to keep the water cool. Note that Cid uses a crate with an aerator and throws in some frozen cooler bricks in the warmer months.

Will be interested to see how you finally rig her up as two people on a yak in a bream comp will require careful usage of space!

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. If you are desperate for the old content of this particular post, it is available below base64 encoded and bzip2 compressed.

Thanks for the help guys
My yak is a nemo 2+1 so i can fish out of it by myself which I was originally going to do and now that I think about it I reckon i should.
Space will definately be an issue.

If you use a swing - use a Plano 700 bait bucket - these are simply perfect. Fits snugly into the rear hatch.
