I carry my espri upside down on the roof rack so I take it off as there is not enough clearance.

If you carry it upright I don't see a problem with leaving it on. Some of the guys I have met leave it on.

thanks guys, however that brings up another question , i carry my kayak right side up because of the wheels on the bottom at the back, this allows me to place the nose of the yak on a block of thick foam on the car roof, and have the back sitting on the wheels and then slide the whole deal up on the roof and travel with the wheels securley attached, reversing the procedure at the water, BUT,should i carry the yak upside down?and , does it harm the kayak carrying it right side up :? :? :?

I only have mine upside down as the gunwhales (spelling?) sits on the roof racks better. I havent got proper holders for mine, and it's a SOT so it fits well, might be more streamlined too.....I never have to travel to far and if given the chance i would transport it right way up and with all gear on, as fast as setting up is already, could always be faster!

Just had this flash of Ash sitting on the yak all geared-up.. on top of the car, controlling the steering wheel and brakes Mr. Bean-style via ropes. ;)

A quick stop, a slide down the front of the car, and into the water.

Good thinking, bits of rope tied to the sterring wheel, or maybe I should chat to the Mythbusters about rigging up remote control? nah, lets make it easy and build a cannal right to my doorstep :D

I leave it on.

I have a cradle on my roof bars so my yak is rightside up. Not only does this train it to know which way is up for when it gets on the water, but it means I don't have to take the seat on and off which is time wasted I could be paddling. I have noticed it is fading so all the hours it spends on the top in the sun is not doing it good.

I don't have any other gear which I leave in the yak when travelling - usually. I have in the past had about 6 rods wrapped in a sheet and taped up then tied into the yak along with some sleeping bags in a waterproof bag. That's because I was going camping and wanted more space inside my vehicle, not because I paddle so far out I need to kip in my yak. Once I accidently left my PFD in the yak and it fell out on the way home. I don't do that anymore. That's because I don't have it anymore to lose it again.

Thanks troppo, i certainly like your idea of carrying the kayak right side up in order to train it to stay this way , Shayne, perhaps you might look at this mate , its sorta like pottie training i guess , i also have kayak cradles on my roof bars in order to carry my tk1 and my sea kayak, i guess i will have to stick to carrying the espri this way as it is the only loading system that my back seems to almost tolerate, i wish these boats were as light as my tk1 , 12 kgs, i really hope i am not doing any damage to the espri carrying it right way up

I'm on it Baz, I liked the idea so much that I strapped myself, right side up, to the roof of the car as well for an hour or so this morning. If it's good for the exploder it has to do me some good as well, doesn't it??
