Nice day for it Occy. Bit of breeze up our way but the sun made it a glorious winter day. Few lizards to keep it interesting for you.

I grab flatties in two ways. First, as Kraley said, is to grab them by the mouth. Easy to prise open the lower jaw. Be aware that they have sharp teeth. I use a cloth to protect my fingers when doing this. The other way is to turn it on its back and grab it around the body with your thumb pressing on its anus. This sends them into a torpor, most of the time!

Finally, if you are wounded by the gill plate spines, rub the wound on the belly of the fish. Supposed to counteract the poison.

The environet type nets are great for lizards as you can do all the handling within the net. Only risk is when lifting it for a photo

Hi BJT

As Peril AND Kraley said definately use a rag or glove as the little blighters do have sharp little teeth and when they wriggle around and you happen to have a loose grip on their gob the teeth start to serate unsuspecting fingers off. My preferred method is to turn them upside down and slip my thumb and forefinger under the gills but if I plan to release the fish a lip grip is preferred as your other hand can support the tail and mid section. The spike can be located on the top and to the rear of the gill cover of the Flatty slip the blunt side of your knife under the plate and you will see find it.

Of course most of my Flathead are far to heavy to lift just with one hand anyway
Sounds like a great day Occy nice report and pics mate.

Perhaps that could be called the mardi gras grip, and like occy would stop me immediately

Like Russ I flip and get a gill grip underneath.

Occy the St Ignacious rotunda brought back memories for me, but not to my wife; rowing regattas were held along that reach of the river in the past
