Snuck in a fish Sunday arvo in what were pretty ordinary conditions with 20kn winds & temperature in mid teens. Things started badly when I got my anchor hooked on something & couldn’t retrieve it, paddling upstream & even to the bank I still couldn’t budge it & was forced to cut the rope.

The fishing was quiet until just about the bottom of the tide. Strangely the birds started circling an area of the river but from a very high level, not diving to suggest baitfish etc. I paddled over & flicked the SX 40 (my new best friend) into the area & got whacked on the first cast by a nice bream, strong fighting fish & was, in truth, smaller than I expected when he come to the surface. I fished the area for 20 minutes C&R 5 bream. After this time the birds moved on & so did the fish. I couldn’t see any bait fish in the water & the water was only 2.5 to 3.5mtrs deep. Any ideas ??

Cheers

Jeffo

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. After pondering your situation for about 3.25 seconds I feel I may have the answer.

CLUE NO.1 At the opening of your report you suggested that your trip started badly due to your anchor becoming snagged on a very solid object.

CLUE NO.2 Birds circling on high but no sign of bait schools.

CLUE NO.3 Water depth of 2.5 to 3.5 metres.

After much deliberation  and a toilet break I believe that the source of your anchor problem was the plug to this particular waterway. The birds could detect the potential feast if you could just remove the plug by pulling the anchor rope thus freeing the water to flow down the drain and leave hundreds of stranded fish on a riverbed for the circling birds to pick off at random.

What you witnessed were birds singing pull Jeffo pul, pull Jeffo pull You panicked at this moment thinking that voice from my teenage years is back to haunt me. You took matters into your own hands as you did many many years ago and you reached out for the one thing you could depend on  no not your willy :? Ya bloody SX40.

Good on ya mate

thats fantastic Russ.....

There were a few insects around so that might be it.

Not sure about the nest idea only because there were a lot of different birds not just one type.

Nice work Russ and probably right. Failing this could it have been a warm patch of water causing a thermal hence updraught for the birds and nice spot for the fish?

I am heading to Kiama for a week over Christmas Jeffo and will be pitching a tent with the family. There will be no presents for the kids this christmas as there is no room in the car due to all my yak fishing stuff coming along (it's all about priorities - they will understand one day :D ).

Anyway...can you please give me a heads up Jeff on what to expect and where to go yak fishing wise. I am staying at the Kiama camp ground and am wondering what the beach launch is like. Any tips and insights most welcome and much appreciated.

Cheers,

Great story Jeffo. That bream certainly has a nice colour and looks fat.

While Russ's explanation sounds plausable and logical, like all Russ's posts, there may be another explanation: Close analysis of the pic of flocking birds reveals they are of a vulture species common to Jeffo's area. They flock together like that when watching a potential food source. Jeffo struggling to pull in a kayak anchor would have sent clear signals of a creature with failing strength and vitality. Hence, they watched to see if he collapsed in his yak or into the sea. Luckily for Jeffo, rather than simply sitting still in his yak while he drowned some bait - thus his almost motionless posture may have incited the birds to attack - he actively chucked a lure about the place. The birds, recognising that yak fisho was not about to come onto the menu, moved to better hunting grounds.
