Hi guys,

Matt of Jemwatercraft has been designing a fishing SOT for me that hopefully will meet my needs. He calls it a Wade Fish but I call her Kadaitchi after an aboriginal spirit renowned for its speed, stealth and ruthlessness in it pursuit of its prey.

What I am hoping to achieve, is a very good fishing platform with some of the features of the Dorado and some others (thanks guys) on an efficient hull similar to a mid sized sea kayak. What has evolved is in the concept sketch below. Hatches and centre console are not displayed as yet. Deck layout will be similar to Matts Sabalo.

The boat will be around 5 metres long, 650mm wide with a planing hull to take advantage of following seas and wind chop. It should have real rough water and surf capability and hopefully will weigh around 20kgs.

Matt has told me the plans, drawings and lofting sheets are almost finished, So I am just about to start. Will keep you posted.

Great stuff Hairy! Looking forward to seeing what eventuates.

Had you had any thoughts on installing a molded cockpit? Perhaps cast from an OK Scupper Pro.
Are you also designing for a centre console?

Hairymick,
Looks deadly bro ! I'll have to update yaks soon to something that can handle the surf and open ocean a bit better. DIY is something I'm not ruling out so I will be following this thread with great interest.

The sketch of the kaidaitcha looks good.

Eventually when built and ready for launching, maybe an AKFF corroboree at Burrum Heads might be the way to go, by way of celebration

G’day Peter,

Mate, I built mine a little differently to the way Matt does. I used a strongback and built it upside down.

I used tape on the inside and the mess I got on the outside was from not epoxying the panels before I started to glue. The stain from the woodflour and epoxy, penetrated the ply and left a permanent â€Å"patchworkâ€

Will u use the structural ply again?

I remember when i put a new floor in my stinky i was told by the timber dude not to worry about marine ply.and use CD ply(structural)

Been down for ten years now and still good.

Was there a reason for the jig you built for it and it is interesting you used the spacers that way, i gues you had to building it upside down.

One more annoying question .
Can you make up a list of all the stuff you used , i know it's all on the board but it's spread all over the shop in that thread, please :?:

Hi Pete,

Questions are no problem - ask away mate. :D

Re structural Ply - probably not. I have a stack of interior "blonde" ply with very few voids or faults. The ply will be saturated with Epoxy Resin so there is no real need to go the real expensive stuff. ( It is also much lighter that the structural stuff too. All timber will be completely saturated/sealed with epoxy so it will be waterproof anyway.

My thoughts on the ply are that all it really does is to give the hull its shape. Hull strength and integrity comes from glass and ply laminates.

I used the jig (strongback) because, working on my own, I was having trouble controlling hull shape as I was twisting the ply. The strongback made control of the panels much easier for me.

The spacers are there on Matts recommendation. they allow for easy jointing abd fibreglass filleting of the seams. ( and seems to give a stronger joint.

Re the list, will work something out and PM it to ya. :D

Nice one Hairymick. Looks like the race is on
Looking forward to see how yours goes together compared to mine. I'm struggling a bit at the minute with badly fitting plates at the ends, they are triple wired  and still won't come together. Looks like I may need to get the Jigsaw out on them :( . Guess that comes from not using the tried and tested.
Good luck.

HairyMick, better get a month's groceries in the house as ya won't have time to do the shopping once the plans arrive. Or mowing, or washing up, or vacumming, or laundry, or watching TV or . . . . Wow, betcha can't wait!!

Will Purple Girl bring you your food in the shed? Or do you have to come out for meals?
