Jet powered yak

Has anyone thought of making their yak jet powered using a bilge pump or other 12v marine pump.
I was thinking of rigging somthing up so I'd have hands free opperation to manouver me yak around snags while chasing Jaks up small creeks.

It would not cost much to rig up and would use a foot opperated switch for on/off and I would steer using me foot opperated rudder.

What are your thoughts on this. And do you think it would work.

My guess is that a leccy would be more efficient
Anyone got a pump and would like to give it a try?
I should however be able to rig it up for under $50 which is a lot cheaper, compact and lighter than an lecky outboard. And if it works I'll be jumpin for joy.

If anyone has a old bilge pump laying around, would they mind hooking it up to some power and holding it over the side of their yak to see how much thrust it would give.

Thanks
Geezuz mate, save yourself the hassle and get a Hobie! :D
Here ya go,check this out. Maybe do some high speed trolling? http://www.walford.ca/2006/06/16/jet-po ... t-suv.html
hey shaun , what a hoot, i want one , tell you what , i will get one and drive up with the guiness i owe you, unbeliaveble , now thats really a buzz
not as fast as the other one, but this one is in production in the States

Shame it's not an electric powered one

Dave
There was a story on TOPGEAR a while ago with a guy in a jet powered kayak, pretty awesome stuff, not really practical for fishing though. :p

It sounds like a reasonable source of propulsion for intermittent use, much like bow thrusters on large vessels though after my experience of mounting three different jet motors in a 4m tinnie I would;

1. forget it, jet propulsion theory is mainly reliant on momentum with little start up torque.
2. get a hobie.
I am sorry....but someone has to say it.

A kayak with a motor is nothing but a "stink boat". :(

What about a Rocket Powered or Turbine Jet Powered Kayak. That would be cool. Some Mad Yank has probably already done it.
here it is

I might fit a small Jet Turbine to my Kayak now. 8)
yeah alright then...... a bilge pump water jet is slightly less than u r envisaging but whatever guys....................#@$%^
Hey CeltA, I've been toying with the idea for my second kayak but unless you can get a bloody massive pump the thrust you get when I did the calcs was not enough. Working it through (with no friction I may add and from a dodgy memory) the maximum speed from a 1600 Gallon Per Hour pump gives a theoretical top speed of around 4 km/h and I can paddle faster than that  . Add in friction and you are probably stuffed so I just canned the idea. I'll dig out the calcs and the theory behind it if you want mate, just give me a shout :D .

As it happens I've been to Whitworths today and noticed that they have a new bilge pump that throws out up to 3700 Gallons per hour (around 4.6 Litres/second) from a 1.5 inch outlet. This could start to get interesting, but at $390 you may as well get a Jarvis and Walker 40lb leccy for $369 from Kmart :( . I think that even this pump might be under powered for what we'd need.

I reckon the only way would be to get a nice pool pump (thats 12v) and that might be interesting, but again, cost is stupid.

I think that this is destined to be just another one of my dumb ideas! :D
