Don't you just love how crystal clear people are when it come to fishing.
I was in BCF today and i was talking to a guys about the new X-rap Rapala lures (Which look totally amazing and are on my have to buy list for next week) but anyway I asked what he would say is a good colour for Bass at lake McDonald. He says "It depends on the day" WHAT the hell does that mean??????? It depends on the day hmmm no two days are ever the same when you go fish, there is to many variables if that's the right word I'm thinking of. Just with the time and weather there are an endless amount of different outcomes.......So if someone says to me "oh it depends on the day" i will assume they don't know. I mean are fish what picky? I fished with a Green scorpion 52DD in Baroom pocket and I'm going to fish the same lures in Lake McDonald.
I thought fish were opportunistic eater? am i wrong?
So what is the deal on that saying? "It depends on the day"

Hehe, he probably should have explained himself a bit better there Rik, I'm a bit like you, I find a lure that works and I stick with it, unless it's not working, then you have to start thinking "why not?". This has always kinda seemed a bit wierd to me, but aparently if the sky is overcast and/or the water is cloudy you should use a dull or dark coloured lure, but if the sky is clear and the water is clear then you should use a bright coloured lure or the water is SUPER clear, a transparent lure is supposedly dynamite!
Hope that helps a bit, I'm no expert as I said, I just put on what looks good and if it doesnt work I change to something else. :?

Its like asking what's the best car for driving - on different days you dodifferent things and your needs change. Heading up the beach you need a 4wd, down to the airport you'd like something that cruises along the highway and so a new sedan would do the job. Can only afford one car then you get an all-rounder, maybe a hybrid 4wd/sedan.

Much like your bass lure question - it seems you were asking the question of what is the best all-round bass lure where as the bloke was saying (or attempting to) that depending on the conditions what will be the best bass lure will change.

Out of interest Rik - how much is BCF charging for x-raps in 08, 10 and mag30 sizes?

I find the very best lures, are the ones you havn't got anymore. Like the ones that get busted off, cos its your favorite, and you forget to take care of your line. Or the ones that get snagged up and you can't recover. Then you go trawling through the shops looking for one just like it, and its not in stock so you have to buy 5 or 6 others, cos thats the rules.

Cheers all Andybear  and taking little heed of good advice about colours and overcast, and murkey, and clear, just give me the one I like 8)

In some regards I tend to agree with that "it depends on the day"statement. I recently went bass fishing for the first time and caught 3 bass on a purple spinnerbait. Tried again yesterday with a couple of mates and a gold and red spinnerbait accounted for 3 of the 4 fish caught. ( 2 bass, 2 Yellowbelly)

The purple colour that was all the rage last week didn't get a touch, and conditions were very similar.

I have had this kind of thing happen quite often on many occasions.

Re: Fishtales, But why? why does this happen? do the bass sit in a group and discuss the colour lures there going to hit that day?
It really confuses me how lures and the fish they catch change all the time.

I hate it when you do well on a particular lure and nail some good fish and the next time you don't even register a nibble and your fishing buddy ( in this case the wife) uses a lure because they liked the colour of it and do better than you........ but sometimes water clarity and other conditions determine the colour or size of lures used. Some days are like that
