Well Sydney turned it on for me on Saturday afternoon - after entertaining my 2 kids for the morning I was ready to hit the water at around 1.30pm. The conditions couldn't have been better - warm (19 degrees) sunny and no wind.
Only problem was that the local kayak club (racers) had the same plans and on reaching the put in spot (Grays Point) I found that there were approx 60-80 kayaks out on the river, racing 20 abreast up and down... I never thought that I'd be upset to see another bunch of kayakers but this was just insane, there were TOOO many of them!
Anyway I put in and paddled downstream to get away from them - a leisurely paddle seems to ease the stresses quicker than most other things I know
Lobbed out an sx40 and a sx60 and slowly drifted and paddled along the edges of the dropoffs, sandbanks and shoreline getting some nice sun on the face and body in the balmy conditions. Threw some sp's around the likely looking snags and oyster covered shoreline for a while then paddled across to moored boats and pontoons in North West Arm.
Flicked gulp sandworm and berkely 3" minnows around most of the pontoons and boats whilst soaking up the afternoon sun. It was absolutely sensational - dead smooth conditions and hardly any boat traffic to spoil the serenity. (How's the serenity!?)
I realised that it was in fact winter once the sun dipped below the hill and the temp dropped immediately. I also realised that it was winter when I didn't catch one lousy fish.
But you know what, I didn't care! I had a nice afternoon anyway!
