·Fished various parts of Iluka over the last few days in pretty bad conditions, the wind was strong and there was plenty of chop in the river and at sea combined with a small swell made conditions far from ideal.
I fished the river on thursday morning concentrating around the collis and wall and turkeys nest for flathead, picked up quite a few flathead to approx 70cm fishing sp's on 6lb mono the fish werent choosy about colour with some cheapo 4" paddle tails in a prawn pink (these are the sp's that give you birth defects if you live in California) doing the job, there were lots of whiting being boated on the sand banks up stream from the caravan park, next time I go down I will have a go at those as my kids love them. Friday and saturady mornings I fished the ocean launching out of Shark bay into a 0.5m swell this is such great launch site you can always find a calm spot, I paddled out nest to the rocky section where waves were breaking over submerged and exposed rocks at the Southern end and floated a pilly out while spinning the wash it took a while but I was rewarded with two nice tailor around 45cm and my first Australian Salmon which was a tad longer that the Tailor, fish were caught on 15lb mono and a Raider 45gm , I then started to paddle toward The Bluff towing a rapala magnum in slimy pattern after no result, I switched to a pilly with a pink skirt and started to paddle back about 200m off the beach line started to peel off the reel I grabbed the rod but there was nothing on I could see the pink on the surface when someting had another go at it then another I couldnt believe it didnt hook up, the action stopped so off I paddled to shore the swell had picked up a little and I enjoyed a nice wave into shore. On the saturday the swell had picked up a little but launching was still a breeze, once out I thought the swell was bigger than I thought but not uncomfortble, I towed all the lures I was carrying and drifted a pilly for a while but for no result even though the odd bait school broke the surface, it was still a great morning though I had fun riding some swells and the Kayak showed what a good boat it is, I had no problem going through waves and over the bigger swells the stability was fantastic I didnt feel unstable letting swells pass under me side on, the deck drained very quickly when waves broke over the boat, I am considering a new paddle though as I dont think the one I am currently using is stiff enough, any suggestions would be appreciated.
Overall it was a great trip and I am looking forward to heading down in the next week or two.
