JT in NZ one of the standard techniques for shallower water (up to 30m) allows for this inital run. The techniques called straylining. Not too sure how you fish for them in aussie. The techique is main line to swivel or joining knot, trace 60 - 100lb then 2 hook snell rig or single hook if in weedy areas. Its bait fishing with as little as weight as possible. Any weight is a ball sinker threaded onto the trace and slides down to the hook. Typically a whole pilchard is the go or bigger messy baits (the whole flank of an aussie salmon is the ticket). The snapper comes in and grabs the bait and start a small run, starts scoffing it on the small run, when the snapper hits overdrive then strike. Until the strike the reel is in free spool with a slight overpressure by thumb or on the baitrunner setting) so they don't fell the line weight. With more current then more weights are added starting at a quarter once for deaper water and no current to half and once or more as current increases.JT said:
