Gatetsy some months ago I watched a documentary on squid and cuttlefish on Discovery channel.

And they spent most of their time just hovering around and only put on a burst of speed to grab prey, or escape a predator.

So perhaps slow with an occasional flick like an SP would be the appropriate method.

I've only ever drifted with squid as bait, not trolled, so am not sure of a speed

Michael, when I used to troll them off the downrigger off my old surf ski for kings in the harbour and jews in cowan I would paddle very slowly with the occasional burst of speed just like they do in real life. By far the most hookups came when i had just done the burst of speed. I figured it was the same as trolling slimys for marlin ect. The fish shadows the bait. If the bait doesn't give the correct response, that is "hey a big fish is trying to eat me" and put on a sudden burst of speed , there generally wasn't a strike and if there was it was half arsed to the the bait not acting the way it would in a real life scenario.

Catch ya Scott
